Maintenance on rail line around Fuessen/Mittenwald Question
We will be traveling from Lindau to Fuessen soon and will be there for a few days, then on to
Mittenwald. Would be interested in knowing how the rail maintenance will affect our train travel? We were already planning to take the train from Lindau to Ruette and the bus on to Fuessen. Many thanks!!!!!!

IME of decades of European rail travel when lines are disrupted by maintenance - if closed - there will be replacement buses running in lieu of trains.
I suggest you go to www.bahn.de - the German Railways web site that has schedules for all trains in Europe and special details to any trains serving Germany as the Lindau-Reutte train does and as also does the Reutte-Mittenwald. A good way to access the English page of the Wunderbar bahn.de site is to go to www.budgeteuropetravel.com and on that home page click on the link 'All European Trains' or some such wording and it takes you to the English schedule page - i reference this home page link because it also gives several valuable tips to fully using the bahn.de site that may not be apparentl at first glance.
Oops you say bus Fuessen to Mittenwald, via Garmisch and though that i think takes longer it is a nice ride - but if you go back to Reutte you can get a direct train to Garmishc and be in Mittenwald quicker (I think but have not checked schedules).
There is regular bus service Reutte to Fueseen that goes thru the gap in the mountains the several miles separating the two.

PalenQ, thanks again for the additional information. We will be leaving Lindau on a Saturday going to Fuessen and I think the schedules are usually a bit different. Leaving Fuessen going to Mittenwald on a Monday.
Do you have any suggestions for the most scenic trips? Some extra time getting there is well worth it for great scenery. Appreciate you.

People don't stop to have to travel when the rail line needs to be maintained. Train lines are not a tourist attraction, it's an everyday means of transportation for many people. So of course if you have maintenance works therewill be replacement service by bus. It results in longer travel times though as the people need to get from train to bus and back to train, and a bus travels slower anyway.

The fastest route Lindau to Fuessen would not go via Reutte but via trains all inside Germany - changing off the main Lindau to Munich mainline at Kaufbueuren or Buchloe - perhaps a few hours quicker all told then going via Reutte and then bus to Fussen.
I cannot see any dramatic scenery on the Reutte route that is not on the quicker route - and there is no construction it seems on the quicker route.
As for Fussen to Mittenwald both the bus route via Garmsich and the train from Reutte (bus from Fussen) to Garmisch IMO is quite scenic, especially when it rolls by the base of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain - and i believe much quicker - have to go to Garmisch to reach Mittenwald i think by train.
I have taken the bus Fussen to Oberammergau which is probably the one you would take to get to Garmisch - it is nice bucolic scenery but nothing spectacular IMO

Thanks PalenQ and altamiro-
Think we will take the Buchloe route to Fuessen and from Fuessen,
the bus to Reutte and train to Mittenwald from there. It seems I read that we might need to take a bus from Garmisch on to Mittenwald. Will check that out. I know it will all work out but I like to have a headsup on what to expect. Appreciate the very helpful info.

Mittenwald is a stop on the main rail line from Garmisch to Innsbruck so under there is construction and a replacement bus there should be hourly or so trains and the two are not far apart. Again bahn.de has all the details.

The train lines are usually under repair during school holidays (like, right now for Bavaria). Also the infrastructure fund from the government (the thing designed to stop the crisis) is paying out, so the railways use it for repairs and upgrades everywhere. There is a lot of construction activity going on right now.

But the thing is that there are IME always replacement buses to move train passengers aroud the construction zone or trains simply roll slower than normal thru the works - you will get where you are going, albeit perhaps a bit later than scheduled!
