Madrid...where for evening stroll on first night?
Hi everyone! Just trying to get some ideas of where to walk around in Madrid on our first evening. Plane arrives at 4:30pm. Then we will take a taxi to apt by Plaza Santo Domingo. I thought we would then walk to the Mercado de San Miguel for some tapas/light dinner. After that I would like to stroll around a little bit, not too far, before walking back to our apt. Anywhere you can recommend that is on our way back to the apt that is pretty at night? Or one route to dinner, one on the way back where we can have some pretty views of the city at night. Anywhere else for our other couple nights that is beautiful at night? Thanks!

Shoot, that isn't what I was thinking of, it's not really near mercado.
There is a pedestrian walkway near the mercado, it's name escapes me. Someone will know it for sure. We walked along it during December and it was such a hub of activity.

You'll want to take a stroll through Retiro Park, Madrid's best and largest!

Thank you DebitNM. I have the Paseo del Prado on my list after the El Rasto market on Sunday. I'm so glad the mercado is yummy..we will be ready for 'real' food after traveling all day. Can't wait!!!
Thank you Robert2533. We will be visiting the park the next day. It looks so beautiful. Parks actually rate higher than museums for us, so very excited to stroll around this one.
Thank you danon. Great idea. We will pass right by here on our way back to the apt. So excited!!!

One of the unmentioned traditions is the Paseo. In many places including Madrid, Spaniards stroll the streets. It is for people of all ages. I do not know if it still true but younger people would circle back to make sure they were noticed by people of the other sex.
Please correct if this information is outdated, but the best places to see the Paseo were Paseo de Prado, Plaza Santa Ana, and Plaza Mayor.

If you google Plaza de Santo Domingo you can plan your walk down Cuesta de Santo Domingo to the Palace then take C/Santiago up to the Mercado San Miguel, cross over to the Plaza Mayor and then cross C/Mayor and take C/Espejo down to Opera, pass the Teatro Real cross the plaza and walk up C/Campomanes back to your apt.
I f you want to see the palace all lit up at night then just reverse the above route!
I love this part of Madrid!

For the best sights of Madrid by night, you should visit The Roof at Hotel Melia Reina Victoria, right on vibrant Plaza Santa Ana: http://www.melia.com/en/hotels/spain.../the-roof.html
Plaza Santa Ana (within a couple of minutes from here you also find the best flamenco and jazz venues in town with top of the shelf live performances every night, changing artists all the time): http://www.gomadrid.com/sights/plaza-santa-ana.html
You should also see the sunset from the terrace at Restaurante Bar Ventorillo in the small and beautiful Vistillas park, close to the Royal Palace, Plaza de Oriente and the Almudena cathedral. Great views over the Guadarrama mountains: http://www.yelp.com/biz/el-ventorrillo-madrid

LOL - We stayed at the Melia Reina Victoria, kimhe! That is where all our strolls started!
chapla - I think you have mapped out the stroll I was trying to remember.
I meant to add that while we were in Madrid [early December] it was the start of Christmas markets. We were amazed at the number of people out walking at 11 pm -families with babies in stroller and kiddos and everyone else under the moon! We joked that they must not have living rooms [parlors, salons, lounges etc] and so they spend there time outdoors. But then when you eat dinner at 10 pm, I guess a walk about at 11 pm isn't all that odd.
Plaza Mayor looked like a mini Times Square at midnight on NYE.
