Madrid to Dordogne
We are starting our trip on July 14 from Madrid. We are traveling for one week to the Dordogne. What is the best way to travel to the Dordogne from Madrid? Should we fly or rent a car?

Car rentals picked up in one country and returned in another may result in steep drop-off charges - do you have a week to go between Madrid and Dordogne? Trains are a good bet if you want to stop along the way like in San Sebastian or other places en route - if just want to go straight thru yes flying would probably be best as trains on that route are still not high-speed.
For train info I always spotlight these IMO superb sites: www.seat61.com; www.budgeturopetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Madrid to Bordeaux is about 9 hours on a train then a few hours more to Sarlat in the Dordogne - long trip for a day.

We flew from Madrid to Toulouse and rented a car there thus avoiding the steep drop off charges mentioned by PQ. The airline was Iberia operated by Air Nostrum, all part of our American Airlines ticket from the USA. That part of France has much to see and do, and is not that far from Sarlat in the Dordogne.

Flying to Toulouse seems to be a good option and right near Toulouse you could drive to Carcassonne, one of the most famous places in France - the reconstructed fortress-town hovering high above the new town below, along the Canal du Midi.

I think I answered your question via e-mail.
There is a train that leaves Madrid at 10:30 and arrives in Narbonne at 15:20. One train change in Barcelona. Then it's a 4 hr drive to Sarlat. Or you could stop St Cirq Lapopie (2 hr drive), stay there overnight & visit St Cirq. Then Pech Merle cave the next morning.
The drive from Madrid will consume at least 11 hours.
