I will be in Madrid for a conference in a few weeks and will have some evenings on my own. I've checked yelp and have a few names, but I wonder if any fodorites have recommendations for a good restaurant in the vicinity of Nuevos Ministerios. It's not a part of Madrid I know well, so any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't say I'm a foodie but I do enjoy a good meal now and then. Nothing terribly fancy but price range is pretty flexible.

A couple of places I like nearby :
- Cheesebar in Jose Abascal, the restaurant specialized in cheese belonging to the owners of the Poncelet cheese shop http://www.ponceletcheesebar.es/

- Punk and Bach, a brand new brasserie in Castellana. You can order half dishes if you are interested in try more things

These places would be located going down from Nuevos Ministerios. I´ll try to think of some place north. Right now the only place I can think of is the restaurant at the Bernabeu, and the classic places of basque cuisine nearby-

I have to second Poncelet. As a cheese lover, it was excellent!!! We'll be stopping by again in November...

Just checked in to write down these names, I'm heading to Madrid tomorrow and will report back. Hope to try them both, but I am being loaded up with "obligation meals" so I may only have time to try one. If you could only go to one of them, which one would it be?

Sylkar may have one of the best "tortilla de patatas" in Madrid. It is a tapas bar. The have also a very small restaurant upstairs.

Yes, that one´s perfect. Very, very near from Nuevos Ministerios, brand new and really good.

But further afield, I was last weekend at La Maruca, in Velazquez, and it was great. It is just opened. Great rabas (fried calamari) and tuna.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just back from a quick trip to Madrid. Cheesebar was terrific. I had a great risotto and tasted some of the tuna (yum) and secretos (yum yum). We also had a cheese plate and I picked the one with the La Peral, which is one of my very favorites.

I'm not a huge fan of tapas places, but I went with friends to Juana la Loca in La Latina and have to say the food was really outstanding. Crowded and noisy like all Madrid tapas places worth their salt, but we had a nice table near a window and enjoyed several hours. Cash only.

My recommendation is El Quinto Vino. No fancy but they offer a wide array of wines and good Andalusian tapas.
