Madrid, fun restaurant, a not-to-miss experience for 10 people

Might you be able to recommend a FUN, not-to-miss Madrid restaurant ( type of food does not matter....looking for the EXPERIENCE, perhaps location) that could accommodate 10 if we call well ahead?

Also....Anyone know of local, good Spanish Madrid lunch/dinner, away from the typical touristy crowds?

Mercado del San Miquel....Are there restaurants at the market or do you just sample, enjoy, and move on to other tastes?

Thank you!
Sue

Just what experience are you looking for where the food doesn't matter? I guess you could go to one of the Tablaos for flamenco. The food is usually subpar.

Hi Sue,

We went to the Marcado Del San Miguel a few times - as my daughter loved it there! There are not any restaurants at the market that we saw anyway... there is an area in the middle of the market with a number of tables (bar tops) that you can grab (if lucky) as well as a few of the place that have the bar type tables as well. You sample from all over - yummy! I would go grab a few or my daughter while sitting at the table, or we just walked around.

One of the nights we went all the tables in the middle were reserved for a private party. The other evening we were able to get one.

We also went to the Mercado San Antón, in the chueca area . There is a restaurant there - it was not remarkable and worth passing on.

Do you have a budget for restaurants? Preference for meat, seafood? Are the people in your group adventurous, or do they need familiar foods?

None of the ones I visited on my last two trips was what I would call "touristy." But none of them are what you would call an "experience," other than the experience of tasting wonderful food, and watching the people around you. If any places in these reports appeal, you have to book ahead--I would make sure they will take 10. I love Madrid!!

Here are three places that could all be a fun experience in its own way. All very popular with locals.

Casa Granada on the 6th floor of an apartment building with views over local atmosphere Plaza Tirso de Molina. Hard to find and a great terrace.

Watch the sunset over the Guadarrama mountains from the terrace at El Ventorrillo in the Vistillas park. Great pollo al ajillo (garlic chicken), some say the best in town. Map, video, reviews in Spanish and some pictures: http://11870.com/pro/restaurante-ventorrillo

Asturian Casa Mingo for the best grilled chicken and cider: http://www.casamingo.es/

Casa Manolo from 1934, a very popular lunch place for madrileños working in the district: http://www.manolorestaurante.com/

They've got excellent three course meal offers for both lunch and dinner.

I was in Madrid in January and went with a group to Coral de la Moreria. I was not expecting a gourmet meal, but it was fine. The evening's highlight was the flamenco performance. Witnessing the passion and labor of the performers at stage front was a special experience.

If you seek a pretty wild restaurant, head to El Peletazo around 10pm. Specializing in stag and hen dos, buddies sprees…

We had a great time doing a tapas tour http://www.adventurousappetites.com. James the tour guide leads you to 4-5 tapas bars, recommending specialties of the house and accompanying wines. The bars are within easy walking distance of each other and James was a wealth of knowledge about the food. It was a fun evening.
