I have found some news in Spanish which goes a bit further than the news in English.
https://www.fomento.gob.es/MFOM/LANG.../140324-04.htm
It would seem the official name is going to be Adolfo Suárez, Madrid- Barajas. So One would expect teh airport code to remain the same. But will it mean booking flights will have a different name, or the use of Barajas in the new name mean it will be situation normal? A bit of a mess if you ask me.

It will still be referred to as Madrid-Barajas (MAD).

It is better than the old days when the longest street in town was usually called Franco and the second longest was Jose Antonio.

In Washington, DC, the Republicans call the airport Reagan and The Dems called it National.

Reagan National Airport is Reagan National Airport.

As for Barajas, the Spaniards should have waited and just named it for Juan Carlos I. It will take a lot to surpass his importance in Spain's history.

The official name is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. And I am sure everybody pronounces every letter.
___________

Juan Carlos's halo has been tarnished in the last few years.

Ironically here is an article from today's Telegraph which indicates 2/3 of Spaniards want Juan Carlos to abdicate.

<Juan Carlos's halo has been tarnished in the last few years.>

Oh who cares - seriously, this has to do with his daughter's foolishness. Geez. Next you'll say Washington was a crap president because despite his wooden teeth he didn't develop a universal dental plan. The man is a national hero and just because various Spaniards of today (especially the "young") may be too daft to realize his importance at the hinge of Spanish history in 1975 doesn't mean they're right.

Just wait, when he passes he'll receive the hero's acclamation he deserves.

And "the Royals" are not disdained - look at the approval rating of the Crown Prince. An American president would love those numbers.

There is no doubt Juan Carlos " betrayed" Franco by the reforms he
introduced, but with the economic hardship Spain has been facing
many Spaniards see the Royals ( not necessarily the King) as a burden
on the taxpayers.

The younger Spaniards I know see no need for royalty and no need to support it.

Like any person, public and private, they are measured on balance. His contributions at the beginning were exceptional, especially the way he stood up to the attempted coup, but his later years have been disappointment.
