Madrid airport to Atocha station do we have a "free" ride?

I have just purchased our AVE Turista Plus tickets from Madrid to Cordoba for March 13th. I THINK I remember reading on TripAdvisor that with this purchased ticket we can take a Cercanias train from the Madrid airport to Atocha station without additional cost by using the Combinado Cercanias code printed on our ticket.

If what I remember is correct we just have to put the Cercanias code into a Renfe machine at the airport and we will receive a printed ticket for a train.

I'd like to know if this is correct or am I confusing this with other information gathered during my research.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Deborah

Cercanias, isn't that a metro line in this case since there is no overland train line from Madrid Airport?

I see following :
Suburban (local) trains
Line C1 of Renfe Cercanías runs from terminal T4 of Madrid-Barajas airport to the city centre.

Tariffs
Single ticket: €2.40. Valid for one journey in the two hours after it is issued. This service is free for passengers with AVE tickets connecting with a flight.

kappa thanks, I'm wondering if it applies in the reverse, a flight,in our case with a US Airline, connected to an AVE ticket. But in my mind there is no connection between our airline ticket and our AVE ticket other than it's on the same day. Thanks again, Deborah

Kappa, there are various connections from Barajas to Madrid. There is the metro ( L8 ), there is the airport express bus, and there is Cercanias, the train line that DeborahAnn is asking about.

DeborahAnn, if you already have your AVE tickets, you will see a 5 digit code at the bottom for the Cercanias train. The code is valid for three hours before the departure of your AVE train. So, if your flight is landing 3 hours prior to the departure of the AVE, you should be able to go to the T4, exchange the code for tickets at the Cercanias automatic machines located there (mind you, the first ones belong to the Metro, you must go to the machines at the end) and get to Atocha in the C1.

If you are arriving much earlier, you will have to pay the ticket. In that case, if you are arriving to the T1 or T2, the airport express bus might be a better option than go back to the T4 and the trains. It´s up to you, really.

Bye, Cova

Cova, thank you for the helpful explanation to my question. I did not know about the time restriction. Our means of transportation will be determined by our arrival time and our energy level. Thanks again, Deborah
