Lyon overnight - is it possible?

I'm travelling to Paris with my brother for a week and I was wondering if it was possible to do a day trip or even an overnight in Lyon?

Thanks

This is completely possible and highly recommended (by me at least).

TGV travel time is now under two hours giving you more time to explore the gastronomic (among other things) capital of France.

Have fun.

I agree with Jay. I occasionally do weekend trips to Lyon for a day or overnight on 2-hour train from Geneva. You better arrive if possible, at Lyon-Perrache Station. There old part of Lyon is accessible on foot from there(or with a little help of metro and bus ).

We've done an overnight from Provence. We arrived at the Part Dieu station, and took a 5 min train ride to the Perrache station. I think Perrache trains are scheduled to coincide with arrivals at Part Dueu.

It's a 2 hour trip by TGV and about a 7 hour drive! Lyon is well worth the day trip. My advice is to go to Perrache Station. Sit on the right side of the train facing forward. Just after you cross the first river you will have the most amazing view! Be sure to walk over to Vieux Lyon and explore.

Sure can. I'd pick the overnite option. Lots to see, problem might be what to leave out. Ann the food...

Any itinerary?

Absolutely do this! Lyon is very accessible and a fabulous city. You'll wish you had more time there.

I loved the Hotel La Residence, BTW, which was a recommendation from this board.

Starve yourself before you go and eat as much as you can while you're there!

It seems (I could be wrong of course)that Lyon is overlooked by most tourists from the USA and elsewhere but it is one of my favorite European cities. It is extremely easy to do from Paris and an overnight is exactly the thing to do. I take the TGV into Gare Part Dieu and there are 2 very nice and reasonably priced Ibis Hotels within a 5 minute walk of the station. They both have a great buffet breakfast affordably priced.

Enjoy Lyon with it's beautiful old town area, two rivers, museums and churches.

If you do a overnight, again I'd rather recommend a hotel near Perrache (or Old town) than Part-Dieu (that is newer part of the city). Out of Perrache station, on the right facing the Place Canot, there is very plain 2* Hotel Campanile Perrache. I request a higher floor, 4,5 or 6(?) on the Place Canot side for the view. You could even see the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière. Their weekend rate is about €48. Hotel Résidence mentioned above is on the way from Place Carnot to Bellecour square, on Victor Hugo Street. A bit closer to the Old Town and nicer 3* hotel I have stayed once. Of course it's about €30 more expensive too. When you are based at Perrache (or Presqu'ile), you could do most of the (old town/Unesco) sites on foot, stay till late and walk back to your hotel.

I went to Provence last fall and the train stopped by Lyon and I was kicking myself for not including it in my trip. I'm so happy I could do so this time.

Morgan B had amazing instructions on how to buy TGV tickets in the SCNF site but the site changed and its now only in French, would you know how to buy Prem tickets?

Thank you so much for all your help.
