Between the 2,I would definitely stay at the Lyon Royal-I think it is now a mercure. The Royal is right on Pl. Bellecour-the centre of the city. The other hotel(which I am sure is also excellent) is in the historic-old part of town.
When are you going?

Lyon is the part of "Bon Week-end en Ville" scheme.
If you stay at one of the hotels listed(and yes, Sofitel is on the list), you pay for only 1 night for 2-nights stay over the weekend.
The information is only in French. Click "En savoir plus" under Lyon, and you get the list of hotels participating in "Bon Week-end en Ville" program.

Hi
The Cour des Loges is a famous hotel in a beautiful Renaissance building in the old town. Definitely full of character and charm, location is convenient for the old town and a short walk over the river to the Presqu'ile. I haven't stayed there but have been past it many times and it certainly oozes character.
The Sofitel is on the corner of Place Bellecour in a great location, convenient for shops, restaurants and the metro. But certainly less interesting as a building, and not as charming or typically "lyonnais" as the Cour des Loges.

Without a doubt, you should stay at the Cour des Loges.
It really is a fabulous place and within easy walking distance (5-10 mins leisurely stroll) to Place Bellecour and the main shopping streets.
It's one of the best hotels I've stayed in, and would jump at the chance to stay there again.
