Luxembourg City/Brussels to Vianden via train/bus - What are our options?

Hello,

I would like to visit Vianden. I will not have a car. What are the best options to reach Vianden from Luxembourg City or Brussels?

Thanks in adcance,
Chels

Chels -

We visited Vianden 2 years ago and loved it. We stayed at the Hotel Victor Hugo, which I would highly recommend.

We were travelling by rail from Maastrich, stopped in Clervaux to see the Family of Man exhibit, then headed on to Vianden. We got off the train at Ettelbruck and took the bus into Vianden. It only takes about 1/2 hour. You can pick up the bus right next to the train station. There is a little bar/cafe across the street where you can rest if you have a layover to catch the bus.

You can check out the bus schedule at the following website:

It looks like there is bus service from Ettelbruck to Vianden at least once an hour. Have a great time in Vianden and Luxembourg. Peace.

Two rail routes from Brussels: 1- via Liege then changing to Liege-luxembourg City line, or Brussels-Luxembourg City then train to Ettlebruck for Vianden bus. (Have a Eurailpass, then it supposedly is also good for the bus.) Hard to tell which route would be quicker from Brussels at quick glance.

Thank you so much for the information; this is exactly the information that I neeeded.

One more question, please. Would you say Vianden is a good day trip from Luxembourg City, or do you recommend staying for more than one day?

Thanks again,
Chels

I rode the ski lift up from the valley enjoying the views of the town and castle. I then walked down from the ski lift drop-off, visited the castle and wandered back into town.

I'd say it's a good day trip.

Hi, Chels,

Vianden is easily reached by train from Lux. City, which is itself worth a visit. Sorry, it's been 12 years since I was there, so don't remember schedules and prices. And, as someone else already mentioned, Clervaux is also charming.

One of the nice things about the G.D. of Luxembourg is its small size (the whole country is almost exactly the same size of the county I live in here in Virginia), which means you don't really eat up a lot of time getting from one place to the next.

Have a great trip!
