Well we leave a week from today and I am getting a little nervous. Everyone has been so helpful but I do have a few more questions if you don't mind. We are going to be with a group for the first 2 weeks and we just found out that we can't bring our carry-on suitcases on the bus with us, but we are staying an additional 2 weeks in Sicily and I really need to bring them ( I can't imagine just one suitcase-sorry I am a woman). Does anyone know where we could store our 2 suitcases until we fly to Palermo? Does the airport offer this service? Also can you recommend a nice hotel in Rome by the airport for the night before we fly home? Thank you so much.

If you are arriving FCO and departing to Sicily from FCO, there is luggage storage at the airport. There is also luggage storage at Rome's Termini train station. Why not plan on doing laundry? I would clarify your luggage situation with your tour. I know many people on tours take a suitcase and a backpack. Would that be possible?

How large are your suitcases? I've been on tour groups with a 24" plus a small soft-sided duffel. If you have more than that (perhaps a 26" plus a 21") then call the tour company and ask if there is a way to take both on the bus. They may charge you more. Even if the tour company doesn't charge you, you should tip the bus driver extra if he is loading and unloading 2 suitcases for you at every stop. If you don't need the suitcase on the tour then I would just give the extra bag to the driver to put in the back of the luggage hold until the end of the trip.
Are you beginning and ending your tour at the same Rome hotel? If so, the hotel will store the extra suitcase for you.

You won't have any problems bringing your check in luggage and a carry on with you on tour. I assume the carry on is suitable to bring on board your flight (i.e size, weight). They don't allow it inside the coach because there is simply nowhere to store it. But they are quite happy to store it in the bus' luggage compartment. Above your coach seat you will have a storage shelf. But's it's not very deep. Suitable for a handbag, shopping bag, small backpack, hats, small personal items etc. So go ahead, pack your Jimmy Choos
Most tours state one piece of luggage per person so I wouldn't assume 2 large suitcases would be ok.
You can store luggage at the Rome Termini train station, which might be easier than storing it at the airport. For your final night, it is easiest to stay at the HIlton. The Marriott is also nice, but make sure the airport shuttle bus is running at the hours that you need it. There is a Michelin-starred restaurant at Fiumicino that also has rooms.

If you are flying an inexpensive airline to or from Palermo, you should check about their baggage policy. I believe Alitalia will let you check all your luggage with no extra fees. Your carry-on needs to be regulation size. Not sure about other airlines.
Put out all your clothes and money on your bed.

Seriously. Pack your suitcase and carry it up and down a staircase and pull it a block down the street. You might look silly but you'll be dragging that thing thru airports, customs, hotels. The bus may lift it on and off for you but then it's in your hands. Make sure you can handle it.
Pick a main color for your travel wardrobe and add one or two accessory colors. Take clothes that all mix and match, and can do double duty. Scarves are great for covering your shoulders in a church or your hair if it rains. Use one as a belt or to tie around your luggage to make it easy to identify your black bag amongst all the others, lol!
Wear your heaviest shoes to travel and carry any coat you'll be taking. You can always fold it over your luggage and store it above your seat on the plane or bus.
Narrow down your toiletries. Most hotels supply at least soap, lotion and shampoo. And do you really need to take ALL your jewelry?
You'll enjoy your trip much more if you 'lighten' your load
