Luggage Storage in Rome

We will be arriving in Rome a few hours before check in time on Sunday, June 14. If our hotel will not store our luggage, are there other places to store it? I think the train station does it. Anywhere else?

The airport, but you won't want to go all the way back out there. Most hotels will let you store your luggage if your room isn't ready, but I've always been allowed to check in early.

The luggage storage at Termini is in the basement.

Hello Neal, email your hotel in Rome and double check but I have never had a problem storing luggage with any hotel in Italy (or anywhere) if arriving early and the room is not available. The same has always been true if having to vacate the room but not leaving the city/town until later in the day, hotels have always been willing to store the luggage. And if you let the hotel know what time you plan on arriving they might just have a room ready for you! Have a wonderful time in vibrant Rome.

Because we have a family of 5, we are staying in an "apartment hotel" which is more like an American short term apartment rental. (European hotels, I have learned, almost always accomodate 4, max.) I asked almost a year ago, when I booked the plans, and they said if the room was not ready, we could not store the luggage there. Any other ideas? The address is Via di Santa Maria in Monticello 74 Rome. Thanks!

Termini is really your only option then and it's not so close to your apartment. If you want to drop your luggage at Termini, you can catch the subway to the forum while you are waiting for check-in. It's just two stops to the Colosseum stop from Termini. How much time do you think you will have?

Hello again Neal, I don't as I have never stayed at an apartment type of lodging. I note kybourbon gave the information about the luggage storage at the Termini (the central train station in Rome). If that is not convenient for you hopefully some other Fodorite might have a suggestion or could you email whomever you rented the apartment from and ask them for any information? Or just one other thought, if there is a hotel in the area of the apartment you are renting perhaps (and only a perhaps of course) the hotel would be willing to store your luggage for the time you need although they no doubt would charge you. A hotel in San Francisco was willing to do so for a Fodorite who had luggage and was only in SF for the day and I think I have read that some travellers stopping for a few hours in Orvieto found a hotel willing to do so. Just another thought. Best wishes Neal, I sure hope you can work something out.

I was given the phone # of the apt rental, so I'll try to arrange something with them, if possible. If not, maybe we should store the bags at Termini and then hop on the subway. Kybourbon- when you say 2 stops from the Colosseum, how long a trip is that on the subway (just a few minutes, I'm assuming)? Is the subway station at Termini or do you have to walk elsewhere from the train station?

Luggage storage Termini:

You can either take the subway (line B Laurentina direction) to the Colosseum stop (just a few minutes - 2nd stop) or to the Spanish Steps (line A direction Battistini- 3 stops). It's possible to walk from the train station to the Colosseum (it's downhill that direction on Via Cavour - all uphill coming back) if you have enough energy. The subway is on the lower level of the the train station. There are ticket machines on the way to the subway. Watch your belongings on the subway, hands on your wallets/purses, but you really shouldn't have any problem. Subway tickets are 1€ or you can buy a day pass (4€).

I assume you mean Montecelli not Montecello. If that is the case, then your apartment is close to Ponte Garibaldi and not the Colosseum. There are no subways convenient to that location. In addition, there are not any real direct bus routes from Termini to there. That is a LONG walk from Termini.

Since there are 5 of you, if you can leave your bags at the apartment, I would take a shuttle from FCO to the apartment. I have never had a problem leaving luggage at apartments, but maybe yours is different. If you cannot leave them, then yeah, I'd drop off at Termini, walk around for awhile and then collect them later.

As an idea, across the street from Termini is the Baths of Diocletian, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e Martyri and the National Museum of Rome. The church may not work, because they may be having mass.

You could take the metro to the Colosseum, like KY suggested and spend a couple of hours there. Remember, don't buy tickets at the Colosseum, get them at either of the Forum/Palatine entrances (one by Arch of Titus, one just down on Via San Gregorio). The ticket is good for the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. It is either good for 24 or 48 hours.

You could also take the metro to Colosseo, then take the 87 bus up to Cavour, then switch to the 81 and take it south back by Circus Maximus and getting back off at the Colosseum. This would give you a nice, cheap tour of the historic part of the city.

have fun,

dave

dave - It would help if you read the post. No one is suggesting the metro is close to the apartment. The OP is wanting to kill time while storing luggage at Termini.

Gee, I did read the post and understood that. I was just giving other ideas on what he could do. In addition, he may not be fully familiar with public transit in Rome and it is possible, I don't know, that he may have the street name wrong.

It would help if you read what I wrote, while referring to location in the first paragraph, I went on to further your ideas on things to do.

My mistake - Monticelli - Sorry for the typo. I guess I have to wait until early tomorrow morning to call Italy to see about baggage storage at the apt. KyBourbon, thanks for the link. I like to have as much info as possible before I travel. Another question for to all of you who have posted - Because we are short on time, we will probably only see the Colosseum that day. My kids really want to see it! I'm thinking we will be ready to see it around 12:30 - 1:00 pm. Should we take a guided tour of it, which I understand are 3 hours? Keep in mind that we have 3 small children, and we will have just deboarded an 8 night cruise.

Then I would do what Ky said, take the metro to Colosseo stop from Termini.

Since it is summer, the hours for things will be longer, so you could also visit the Roman Forum, exit out to Campidoglio, then down to Piazza Venezia, depending on how tired you and the kids are.

If you have left your luggage at Termini, then you can take either the 40 or 170 bus back up to Termini from Venezia. The bus stop is, I think, just in front of the cordonata or steps coming down from Campidoglio.

If you can get into your apartment first, then you can take the 63 bus from a stop on Via Arenula (about a block from the apartment area) to Venezia and then walk up to Campidoglio, down into the Forum and ending at the Colosseum.

Once again, depending on how tire you all are, you can either walk back up to Venezia and grab the 63 heading to Teatro Marcello terminus, getting off at the stop near your apartment or if tired, take the 87 across the street from the Colosseum up to Venezia and then switch to the 63.

Thanks for the bus numbers and directions -very helpful! Any thoughts on whether a guided tour of the Colosseam is a "must do?" Do they have self-guided tours as well? How will the lines be on a Sun afternoon?

A guided tour is a personal decision. Some folks love them, some don't, so I really can't say.

Normally, the longest lines are before noon, but remember that you don't have to stand in the ticket line. If you are standing in front of the Colosseum, look up the Via Sacra towards the Arch of Titus. To the left you will find a ticket booth. Also, look down Via San Gregorio, past the Arch of Constantine and you'll see another. Buy your tickets there, then walk right past the entire line and go straight to security entrance. The line is to buy tickets, not for actual entry.

If you are interested, I have a free website that I am putting together with a bunch of info on Rome. It includes some video itineraries and downloadable MP3 tours...

http://www.passagetoroma.com/index.p...d=48&Itemid=55

You can put the MP3 files on an IPod or MP3 player and use them as a guide. There is a lot of info on the Colosseum. Plus there are maps for the entire transit system and more.

Forget I suggested walking from Termini. I see on your other post how your kids are much too young for that much walking. You will also have to be careful with public transportation which can be crowded. Stress to the kids to stay close at those times.

I'm a big fan of the Roma Pass (depending on what days you will be in Rome), but you don't say how long you will be in Rome and I'm not sure how it works with kids. I haven't seen anything on their website about a pass for children. The pass includes a 3 day transport pass which lets you hop on trams, buses, metro which makes it easy if the kids get tired of walking.
