I found some older posts about this, but thought I'd get some updated info in case anything has changed.

We'll be dropping our car off in Orvieto in the morning and would like to tour the town a bit before hopping on the train to Rome later that day. Is there currently luggage storage at the train station, or somewhere else? The plan is to only use carry on luggage so I suppose we could drag it around with us, but we'd prefer not to do that if we can avoid it.

How much time should we plan in Orvieto? We'll have 2 kids with us and have to give a time to meet the owner of our apartment in Rome.

According to the trenitalia website there is NO luggage storage (deposito bagagli) in Orvieto train station.

There used to be a sign in the train station about luggage storage at a nearby hotel (don't know if it's still there). It would be difficult to drag luggage around as it's all cobblestones.

Why not turn your car in a bit later and leave your luggage in the trunk? There is a big free parking lot just behind the train station.

The car rental office closes at 12:30, otherwise that's exactly what we would have done.

Cobblestones give an interesting twist to our consideration - glad you mentioned that!

I would turn the car in, then go the centro storico and find a nice-looking cafe/restaurant. I remember a suitable one on the main street not far from the duomo. While ordering a decent lunch (and being friendly to your waiter,) mention your problem and ask if you could leave your bags there for a couple of hours. With children in tow, I don't think they will refuse you.

Here's the final word...at least for June 2011...I wrote to Hotel Picchio today and they were nice enough to respond back right away. They wrote...

<<our hotel provides storage for baggages......the fee is 4,00 euro for each baggage.
The hotel is only 250 mt far from the railway st and funicolar st.

Here is my tip for the day if you are dropping off your car near the train station in Orvieto and want to store your luggage at Hotel Picchio for the day...

DRIVE THERE FIRST!!! There are signs for the hotel once you get off the A1 highway, or mapquest the hotel. Drop off your luggage and then return the car. If you are using Hertz or Avis, they are just at the bottom of the hill to the left. The funicular is just around the corner from there, across the street from the train station.

Take cash to pay.
The hotel is closed from 1 - 2 so don't plan on dropping off or picking up then.
It is a very easy walk up the hill to the hotel to pick up your luggage, and then easy downhill with the luggage. It is also a fairly short walk to the train station.

I also recommend writing to them if you are reading this a long time after it is posted to be sure they still offer this service - wouldn't want any nasty surprises. They answered my email right away. When we picked up our luggage after visiting Orvieto, other suitcases were there as well.

The hotel is uphill and we would have died taking our luggage that day - it was hot out!

I didn't notice it, but then again I wasn't looking for it either since we were more concerned about catching our train and keeping our luggage out of everyone's way. Boy am I glad we followed the advice to only use carry-on luggage. How can it already be so much heavier than when we left home?! We have already filled our empty duffle bag too!

Has anyone noticed luggage storage in the train station since July? The Trenitalia page listing services at the station is dated 2008! . . . I am hoping for the best. . .

Thanks for clarifying this, ellenem; may I ask if it's on the basis of personal knowledge rather than from the website?

I'm inquiring on behalf of a group who may be travelling by train from Rome to Florence; Orvieto would be a terrific stop on the way but not if they have to haul their luggage around more than say a block. Would the hotel mentioned earlier in this thread still be the only/closest luggage-storage option?

The only option is the hotel. Orvieto is a small station and there really isn't anywhere for a luggage storage room. Here is the official info page from Trenitalia. Scroll down to Orvieto and you will notice the last column (Deposito bagagli - luggage deposit) is not checked.

Thank you, kybourbon--I had hoped that the page might be out of date, but from what you say I guess not. I've just emailed Hotel Picchio to see what baggage storage they provide.

When we stored out luggage at Hotel Picchio, they just left it next to their desk. Be sure to specify how large the group is because there isn't a lot of room (unless they are willing to block their walkways or put the luggage in around some tables). The hotel isn't far, but is up a bit of a hill. I wouldn't want elderly people to take their luggage up there.

Thanks for the heads up, kwren. I did say how big our group would be and they indicated they'd be ok with that. I guess I will remind them a few days ahead of time so they can work out the logistics!
