Luggage allowance internal connection to international

Flying Alitalia Sicily to Rome connecting to Delta for flight direct to US. Held to Alitalia European domestic requirements? Or delta international? Is baggage checked through in Sicily to US or do we recheck in Rome?

Is the itinerary booked on 1 ticket, or 2?

On a single ticket you have the intercontinental luggage allowance.

Your bags will be checked through too. You will leave Schengen in Rome, so go through passport control there.

I haven't done that but can't imagine why it wouldn't be checked through, they are partners.

Their baggage allowances are virtually identical anyway, so not sure what you are asking about. The checked bag weight limit is the same. The only difference I know of is the carryon, and there the size is the same, it's just that Alitalia has a wgt limit and Delta does not, but that limit should be enough if you are checking bags anyway (8 kg). Both allow a personal item in addition.

If your carryon bag is too large for the domestic flight, Alitalia will put a tag on it at the gate, and give you the other half. You hand it over as you're about to board the plane, and they give it back as soon as you disembark. It's kind of like gate checking, except that you don't have to wait for the bag at the baggage carousel.

Your checked luggage will be checked through to your U.S. destination. However, your carry-on luggage to Rome will be restricted by Alitalia's rules for travel within Europe. That sometimes means your carry-on luggage will be measured and weighed. If it's over, and you can't change things around to satisfy the rules, you'll have to pay a fee.
