LUCCA from Livorno

Would like to go to Lucca and back from Livorno in 1 day.
Short of renting a car, any suggestions how to do this?
Also, any place suggestions for visiting between and Lucca and Livorno?

You can take the train. Go to the Trenitalia website.

It takes about one hour by train from Livorno Centrale to Lucca - always involving a change of trains en route - nearly always in Pisa Centrale, a small enough station so not difficult. These are mainly regional trains with a flat fare - no reason to buy any ticket in advance.

A ticket is good on any regional train but you should validate the ticket yourself before boarding - stick it in a cancelling machine on the platforms or your ticket will not be valid I believe anyway.

Buy a return ticket at Livorno. Fare is really cheap - probably 10 euros or less each way I would think. Trains run all the time - avoid the occasional IC train that has you changing at Viarregio - no faster and you must have seat reservations before boarding and costs more - not any faster - just stick to the hourly regional trains via Pisa Centrale.

I assume you are doing this on a cruise? just be aware you will probably want to take a taxi to the train station (there is a bus but for maximizing time, I'd do taxi). Lucca makes a great day trip from a cruise - you can walk or bike the walls - I'd suggest not cutting it too close on return to port - my experience is that Italian trains are NOT always on time.
