Lost Baggage - Lufthansa

I flew from Dublin to Toulouse via Frankfurt on Tuesday 4th. My suitcase didn't arrive in Toulouse and when I went to the desk I was assured that it would be on the first flight the next day (yesterday) and delivered immediately.

My suitcase wasn't delivered yesterday and when I rang the Lufthansa Baggage Claim at Toulouse Airport I was told they are currently unable to track my suitcase. I juqt hope at this stage that I will get it back...

As I only had a short time between connecting flights, I opted not to have carry - on luggage to speed up the security process. Therefore, EVERYTHING is in this case (my laptop, all my clothes and toileteries etc).

I see that I will be reimbursed for purchases due to this delay, my question is:

How much am I entitled to spend (ie, how much will Lufthansa reimburse me) and also, how long will it take for me to be reimbursed?

Thanks for any help...

Only Lufthansa knows.

However, if at all possible, I would urge you to go to the airport and look around yourself. Friends from Scotland were told by another airline that their luggage had been lost on the way to the US and was not traceable. Turns out that the luggage had been sitting in the airline's office at the airport itself for several days. They spotted it as soon as they walked in.

I agree you should ask Lufthansa what they will pay for in the mean time until your bag turns up - reasonable costs are how it is usually put - so one change of clothes (not expensive designer stuff, even if that is what you normally wear), probably not even trousers/skirt, but a shirt/blouse and underwear and a small amount of toiletries.

Lufthansa have an online baggage tracking service, maybe you'll have more luck than they do in finding it.

You should read what it says on their site and follow their rules exactly in case the bag doesn't turn up. There is a limit to how much compensation they will pay for a lost bag - probably less than the value of the contents of your bag if it had your lap-top in it.

I hope you backed up your lap-top before your trip? And have insurance to cover anything Lufthansa don't cover?

The FIRST thing I would do is GO to the airport before asking about compensation, etc., etc. Assuming you have a baggage claim check I am not sure why you were told they "couldn't track" the bag....something's missing here besides a bag I think.

100€ or $100 in cash or TC but only if your destination isn't your hometown. You'll get the money right at the airport.

1300€ max if you bag is actually lost and doesn't reappear. If you actually put your laptop into the bag, it's consdered gross negligence, you won't get reimbursed for that.
So hope for the best.

Hi,

A few years ago we had lost luggage on a Lufthansa flight from Munich/Frankfurt/Toronto/Newark, NJ. After getting no real help from Lufthansa,or Continental (they kept refer me to the other airline) I did this myself:

I had the baggage claim stubs and was able to locate my bags online. I actually found the flight my bags were (no kidding!) on and headed to the airport. After getting more of the "run around" from Lufthansa and Continental at the airport, I ran into a Lufthansa employee, stopped him, showed him my baggage stubs and asked for his help. 30 minutes later I left the airport with my luggage.

How did you do that, please? May be helpful to the rest of us in the future!

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I don't remember exactly how I found out what flight our baggage was on. It may actually have been via telephone with Lufthansa, or via their baggage tracking page on their website. It was a crazy day to say the least. I'm pretty sure I found the baggage and flight they were on online with the claims stub numbers.

Munich to Frankfurt was delayed. We were ushered off the plane in Frankfurt and immediately got on the next flight to Toronto which had already left the gate (these were both Lufthansa flights).

Arrived in Toronto, but while we were filling out luggage claim papers (an agent told us to do this as we knew the bags didn't make the flight from Frankfurt to Toronto with us (WE BARELY made it).

Well we missed our Air Canada flight Toronto to Newark, NJ. We finally had an agent agree to rebook us on the last Continental flight to Newark. They originally weren't going to do this. They wanted us to wait untill the next day and take an Air Canada flight, as the one we missed was the last of the night.

Next morning I called Lufthansa. They say whoever you flew with last is responsible for baggage, even though I told them again and again our bags (and us) were never even supposed be on a Continental flight. Ok, I call Continental, they say call either Air Canada (who we bought the tickets through for the entire trip) or Lufthansa. Around and around we went calling all the airlines to no avail.

I had the claim tickets for our luggage and found the flight (a Lufthansa plane) our bags were on. They were due at Newark in the afternoon. We went to the airport, went to Lufthansa and were told, no they can't help us, see the Continental people... again with the last flight BS. Continental sends us back to Lufthansa.

We were there 2 hours and about to give up but as a last ditch effort, finally just stopped a Lufhtansa employee walking by. We were by the baggage claims area. He took my claims stubs and said he'd look into it. 30 minutes later he appeared with our 3 bags.

Sorry, but having your claims tickets should be of help to locating your bags. Being persistant also helps. Again, sorry I don't remember exactly how it all went as far as online or via telephone.

Absolutely. If you put any valuables in your checked luggage you should check yourself into a mental ward.
