Looking for your expert advice on trip to Capri/Amalfi
I've already received some advice here (thank you), and we have updated our itinerary. We think we've got the destinations decided (having dropped Umbria) and I'd like your advice. We want to spend the last two nights in Rome.
We (me and two Lady Friends) arrive Rome Easter Monday (April 13) (I didn't realize this until after booking my FF ticket. Also, LF have purchased their airline tickets, so we won't be making any changes.)
I have suggested to LF we spend the first night in Rome near the train station to conquer jetlag and allow for delayed flights as we're not traveling together. One LF wants to go right from the airport to Capri (we land around 9am). On one trip (same LF) I was delayed at my connection at Dulles for the night and caught up with them a day late. It was not a problem--as I was flying business class, United put me up in a lovely hotel and gave me $90 credit to spend for dinner/movie/etc. Anyway, I like to plan for things going wrong, and I don't want to have to catch up with them in this case.
Tuesday head to Capri and stay three nights.
Friday move to Amalfi for five nights.
Wednesday travel back to Rome (via Salerno or Naples?) for two nights before flying out of Rome on Friday. Actually, LF fly out on Friday. I fly home on Saturday morning (yet another Italian holiday).
Is it wiser to go to Capri and then Amalfi, or start in Amalfi and then go to Capri? Or does it not matter?
Is it better to transport between Rome and Amalfi via Naples or Salerno? Is one safer than the other? Is one faster than the other? Is one more convenient than the other? Will Capri/Amalfi be very crowded at that time? How far in advance should we be booking our accommodations?
Thanks,
Diane

luv to travel,
I'm half asleep so Ican only give this advice. You will be in Amalfi so I think it will be smarter to return to Rome via train from Salerno. But give other posters a chance to see your thread- perhaps they will offer other POVs.

We went this May and had similar questions re: Capri/Amalfi or Amalfi/Capri.
We finally chose Capri Amalfi in case the ferries weren't running due to rough seas and we couldn't get back to Amalfi in time for our flight home. (I also like to plan for things that could go wrong).
I don't think you will find it crowded on Capri/Amalfi at that time, as May was not crowded. There were people, but we never felt crowded. Don't know about Rome.
Can't speak to your Naples/Salerno question.
Have fun!

Dear luvtotravel,
Amalfi is definitely closer to Salerno than Naples. I think you might better take the train from Salerno: the station is never crowded, quite, clean and the costs are almost equivalent. For example:
Salerno - Roma Termini(via ITplus): 22.5€ and it takes 3 hours
Napoli - Roma Termini (via ITplus):
19.5€ and it takes 2 hours
Hope it helps!

Hi luv,
> move to Amalfi for five nights.
Wednesday travel back to Rome (via Salerno or Naples?) <
It will be much easier if you take the ferry or SITA bus from Amalfi to Salerno and the train to Rome.
The ferry docks are about 3 blocks from the train station. The bus almost at the train station.
If you go via Naples, you take the SITA bus to Meta and then the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Naples.
Enjoy your visit.
