Looking for lodging in Salzburg Austria
My fiance and I are looking at going to Salzburg as part of our honeymoon in December 09...I know this is a ways away but we are trying to get most of the planning out of the way as early as we can and also to be able to know a round about amount of what our 2 week trip to Europe is going to cost us.
We are on going to be on a tight budget...the most we can really spend for one night is 115 Euro...I know it's not much but I was thinking along the lines of a nice little B&B or an apartment...any suggestions? We will be there for 5 days.
We also would need something that is either in walking distance...no longer than a 20 minute walk to the city center (old town) or very close to a bus line that goes to the city center...all suggestions are appreciated as I am not quite familiar with Salzburg.

We recently stayed at the Bloberger Hof, a nice hotel/pensione which we found extremely comfortable and well-appointed, and payed 75 euros per night (incl. breakfast). The rooms were large, with private ensuite shower & WC, and the hotel was right next to a bus stop, from where a bus would take us to old town in 10 minutes.
Since you are planning on going in December, which ought to be low season, you should get even better prices.
BTW, Salzburg is a lovely place !

There is a Hotel in Old town that's probably above your $ amount per night but my wife & I stayed there in 1997 for a couple nights (can't remember the cost)that has a really good restaurant. It is the Goldenen Ente & the meals were great & they served a simply great souffle that you have to order 45 minutes before you want it served. It was outstanding & we had it two nights in a row. We did alot of things but the horse & carriage ride with the funny guide was romantic & informative as well.Being the home town of Mozart you get to see alot of things about him & can have a chance to catch a concert or another entertainment happening.Going up to the fortress on the funnicular(sp) is fun & the view is spectacular from the top. The Hellbrunn Castle is a nice place to visit but I don't know about in Dec. As far as the rates for the Goldenen Ente, I think they were about 95 Euros in 2002 for a double.Their webb site shows quite a bit about the place. It is on a pedestrian st. in old town off a main square & in a 600 year old building. Where all are you going to in Europe in your travels? Do take a scarf, gloves & a knit cap to keep your ears warm. Good travels.

I know all about the scarves being needed in December!!!! Was in Rome Italy last December and froze my rear end off...even with the scarf! I'm bringing a lot warmer clothing this time..
We will be staying around 10 days in Rome and then 5 days to relax after Rome in Salzburg. We will be doing a lot of just walking around the city doing nothing but taking pictures in Salzburg so we are thinking about investing in some snowboots since we will also be going up to the mountains to do some photography..

We also stayed at the Goldener ente, which is right in the middle of all the downtown Salzburg action and loved it. I just went on their website and see that they charge 125 euros for their least expensive doubles, so if you can splurge in Salzburg and cut back somewhere else, you could do it. There's a very convivial restaurant on the main floor of the hotel. Good food. And there are two Nordsees in town, both on Geschmeidegasse (sp?) the main shopping street. Terrific fast fish and seafood with non-fast taste.
I hope you'll be there late in December. When we were there between Christmas and New Year about 4 years ago, there was snow and it was magical.
BTW I think the souffle RONREYN2008 is talking about is called Salzburger Knockerl. It's a kind of floating island and THE Salzburg dessert. Almost every place in town has it. You'll have to try it at least once. Enjoy.

Honestly there isn't a whole lot of room to cut back here and splurge there...
We are spending 10 days in Rome and are staying in an inexpensive apartment there.
We will be eating at a little cafe I love almost each day just because it is sooooo cheap.
When we aren't eating there we will be picking up food from the market..
we will be walking Rome instead of using public transportation...just like i did last time.
we are only making one side trip out of Rome and that's to Pompeii.
we are taking the train from Rome to Austria.
So as you can see there isn't a lot of "wiggle" room with the budget.
I did however find on the boards a little Pension (sp?) called Mon Moose or something like that. It's I guess a B&B right outside of town but there is a bus stop right next to it. It's also only a 16 minute walk in to town....anyone else stay there that can suggest it? Oh, and by the way...it's only 50 Euro a night and absolutely adorable!

It's been several years ago but we stayed at the Hotel Wolf, very convenient, in the middle of Salzburg. It's a small hotel with nice room IMHO and we'd stay there again. Here is their web site:
http://www.hotelwolf.at/english/welcome.htm
Looks like the double rooms are 110 E - 188 E,including breakfast and all taxes, not sure why there is such a huge discrepancy. There are also some very nicely priced B&B type accomodations outside the actual town but a straight shot into Salzburg by bus,I think you mentioned one in a later email. Half the fun is in the planning, isn't it. Enjoy,
Susan

Haus Reichl gets a great deal of praise in many forums. http://tinyurl.com/6cjj8y On tripadvisor, it's rated #1 of 19 B&Bs in Salzburg. Price is right, too.

We always stay at the Hotel Sallerhof located in Groedig, a village about 6-7 miles south of Salzburg. There is bus service to take you into Salzburg, although we have always used our car. The price is around 80 euros per night, including breakfast. We have stayed there 5 times since 1998 and highly recommend it.

Hi H,
I can very highly recommend http://www.ammoos.at/
The Strassers are very congenial and helpful hosts.
The bus to the city center is about 2 min walk. 12 min into town.
Get a Salzburg card.

Enjoy your visit.

i just booked a room at bloberger hof, per indiancouple's recommendation. i checked the reviews on it - they're mostly 9.5s and 10s. it looked like a very charming property and the price is right. we will be driving a car so the location is ideal and we'll end up saving on parking fees too!

We liked Am Moos also. Last fall our room was 48 euros and had a view of the alps. Great breakfast too. It is a simple house but quite charming. There are lots of B&B's on Moostrasse and most are former farm houses. The area has a rural feel to it and a few farms may still be up and running.
