Looking for Isle of Skye B&B Recommendation

Well, I think that I've settled on 2 nights on Skye.

Any thoughts on where to stay? My preference is for a B&B, but any recommendation is welcome.

How about the pros/cons of Uig vs. Portree vs. Dunvegan?

Thanks in advance!

Hi - as you know, we stayed in Uig and it was fine for us. We spent a lot of our time out on the Trotternish Peninsula. But, it is pretty far out there and probably more convenient for those who are departing/returning on the ferry. Portree is a bit more central to the island and has more dining options, as well as a bit of shopping. Next time around, I'd probably look in that area, but I don't think I'd want to stay at one of the hotels right down on the harbor.

If budget isn't an issue, I believe people seem to like the rooms attached to the Three Chimneys restaurant, which is renowned.

There are literally hundreds of options. It seems like almost every house we passed had a B&B sign out front, and there are some nice small inns all around the island.

If you haven't done so, you might take a look at some of the reviews on Trip Advisor, as well as a site like visitscotland.com.

Thanks for the info... I noticed that there were a ton of B&B's on Skye, that's probably why I was having such a tough time narrowing things down.

Hello. We are going to Scotland in May next year and are also battling to find recommendations for b&b accommodation on Skye.
Two we are looking at are www.corrylodge.co.uk and www.dunsgiath.com. I think the last one isn't taking any more bookings for 2004. Corry Lodge is in Broadford and Dunsgiath in Portree. I think I found them on the Undiscovered Scotland site www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk.
Hope this helps.
Lisa.

Thanks so much, that would be great. I have been able to get loads of recommendations for Irish b&bs, but have battled with Skye. It's always nice to hear from other travellers.

Have a look at the Greshornish. It's changed hands since the Bookchick was there with us in January, and it was very idiosyncratic but pleasant.

Areawise I like Uig better than Dunvegan or Portree, but there's no doubt that, for getting around, Portree is the best option.

Thanks Sheila...

Do you know anything about the Ashaig B&B and that area of Skye? I got recommendation on it from a friend of a friend.

Actually, Sheila, I loved that place! I had a great time, thought the guest rooms were lovely (as well as the billiard room, the sitting room & the dining room), thought the location right near a loch was gorgeous, and other than a couple of "Fawlty Towers" type of moments, (which are still great for comic relief--I've told the tale now many times in America to a most appreciative set of audiences), it was top-drawer. The folks who owned it were in the midst of selling it, and I'm fairly certain this helped iron out any minor customer service issues we experienced.

Best wishes, astein12. It's stunningly beautiful!

Hello again. I had a look at Ashaig and thought it looked lovely. Had to chuckle at the photograph of Hamish the cow.

We stayed at Rowan Cottage in 2003- it's a bit remote, but you get to know the cows waiting for you in the road every day. The owner gave us a few Gaelic lessons (I think she probably just couldn't stand us butchering the place names!) She is also a wonderful cook.
I will say that we spent 2 days on Skye, loved it, and really wish we had planned 3 or 4 days.
Good luck!

Jonesie,

Thanks for the information. What did you think of staying on the southern half of the Isle?

It made for a bit more driving than I had planned, but we rather enjoyed being "remote" for a couple of days. There were about 4 "heilan coos" in the road both day and night and we would have to wait for them to saunter off the road. It made for some hilarious pictures and rather amused us. Plus, the owner of the B&B (can't think of her name right now) told us you have to swear at them in gaelic to get them to move, and she taught us some choice words. So, it does make for some extra driving time, and you won't have any nightlife, but we rather enjoyed it.
Definitely do the hike to the Old Man of Storr, we had such fun (there is a great and very accurate description of the walk in the Footprint Guide.)

You are very welcome. I just figured out (call me slow) that I also answered another post of yours on Scotland too. If you want the spreadsheet, let me know (I am rather anal, so it lists everything-- where we stayed, ate, what we did, etc.)
I saw that you have been to New Zealand-- we will be on the South Island for three weeks in November, so if you have advice you care to share....

If you are still looking for a B&B on Skye, we spent 2 nights at the Roskhill House in Dunvegan this past May and thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe they have a web site.

Thanks for all of the input... we booked the Roskhill House (prior to your input Tec, but thanks for the good word anyway!).

We finally finished our itinerary (thanks to all, esp. the Shiela and the go family). Will post a trip log upon our return (Oct 10).

Thanks again!
