Looking for info on Caherconree in SW Ireland
Has anyone ever been to this old fort up on the mountain? If so, can you drive to it, or is it only accessible by hiking? I'm guessing you must hike at least part of the way, is it a long hike and is it "worth it" if you know what I mean. Thanks for any help.

For anyone interested, like I, in this post go to
http://www.dingle-peninsula.ie/camp/c-history.html
I haven't a clue but from the web site I posted above it sounds like hiking is your best bet.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Wendy

From my map, it looks like Caherconree is about 2km (1& a quarter mile) off the road that goes by it. However, the topography on my map, & the web site I posted confirms, the height being over 600m (625 metres = 2,050 feet to quote from the above web site.) That sounds like a hike to me!

I've always wanted to hike up there, but never had the time. There is a road that passes by Caherconree going north south over the mountain ridge, however its a very small, narrow road, and I'm not sure if it's even on the Michelin map. I know it's on the Ordance Survey map. There is a sign on the road that indicates the fort above, but I could never really distinguish it from all the other rocks. I think there are black & white painted poles that guide you to the top, but I could never find them. In Dingle Town look for the book 'Dingle Peninsula', and there's a good section of the fort (and all the other wonderful sights).
