Looking for hotel or apartment in Avignon. Any ideas?
Hello Everyone,
After disappointment of cancelled trip to Paris last October, am now planning a short 9-day trip to Paris and Provence.
I have already reserved an apartment in the 6th with Vacation-in-Paris, and I need accommodation in Avignon. My adult daughter will be traveling with me. I would like something convenient inside the walls at no more than 120 euros per day, included breakfast would be nice.
I've searched the forums, but there are no recent threads. I've also looked at Venere.com and France.com, but would like a recommendation from someone who has been there recently. I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks. Gladys

My two daughters and I stayed at the Hotel Kyriad at 26 Place Horloge in June 2006. It's in the pedestrian zone about a block from the Palace of the Popes. Nothing fancy, but the A/C worked, it was clean, had a pleasant patio for meals, and it was very centrally located. I can't remember if breakfast was included, but there is a supermarket about two blocks away. I'm pretty sure our quad room had a mini-fridge. I just checked its website, and double and twin rooms are available for 85 euros per night. Avignon was a great base to explore Roman treasures such as the Pont du Gard and the arena in Nimes.

Well, I was there at the beginning of September for 3 nights with my 81 year old mother and a friend of hers who is actually my age. We stayed together at the Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis that is just inside the walls, and super convenient to everything. It's about a half block from the main (non-TGV) train station, and several blocks to the pedestrian zone and the Popes Palace (the castle by the Pont d'Avignon).
You can get different deals at this hotel, so it may or may not be within your price range. Some of their deals offer breakfast, but if not, there's a little patisserie across the street that serves good little petit dejeuners -- you can even go over to the train station and bring back coffee, breads, and oj.
The hotel, however, gets mixed reviews, because it mixes the very old building (16th Century, with Chapel!) and very new part that is, imo, oddly laid out, and feels like they made rooms from a former Public Storage building using Ikea furniture. The old part, I hear, is very charming, and the common areas were just beautiful. Didn't want to spend an egregious amount of money for their breakfast, although their dinners looked and smelled pretty good! The new part is where we stayed, and there was plenty of room for the three of us to spread out, a nice overhead flat screen t.v., a/c and a huge balcony. The bathroom was so small as to be laughable.
When you are hunting for hotels, do not consider staying along the rue de la Republique if you want to avoid a multitude of young squatters, homeless, drunks, etc. since that street is filled with them. I would try and stay, if I were you, around the Palais des Papes area, around the Place d'Horloge.

Check out www.homelidays.com for an apartment. We've had great results with this website, renting apartments in Paris, Londaon, St. Remy, Nice, Venice, Milan, and Lake Como. It takes a bit of research, but we've had very few surprises.

Hi Surfergirl and Bellarosa,
Thank you for your responses. I am considering Hotel Kyriad (it has tea and coffee facility and small fridge) and B&B LaBanasterie which looks very nice, depending on their rates. Gladys

I stayed here: Hotel du Palais des Papes
the rooms vary, and trip advisor had mixed reviews, we had one of the renovated rooms facing the Palais and it was great, and a great value. Staff was fine, I'm not sure why the mixed reviews. Note, there is no AC, not an issue as the building is slab and stays cool early in the season, we saw some of the "courtyard" rooms and non renovated rooms, but would not recommend staying those.
