Looking for good neighborhood to stay in London

Traveling to London next August - yes, during the Olympics - trying to find a moderately priced hotel or B&B for me and my daughter that will be in a safe neighborhood with easy access to the tube. Thinking about Bloomsbury and the Morgan Hotel, but someone said it might be out of the way a bit. Kensington seems very expensive from what I've seen online. Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated!

During the Olympics any place will be expensive. Morgan's is perfectly well located - but will be surprised if it costs less than Kensington.

The Morgan is amazingly central. Who on earth told you it was out of the way??

'moderate' could mean anything. What is your actual budget?

The Morgan is around $200 a night. So I figure that's probably what I'm aiming for, even if I would prefer less!! A lot of places in that range are booked, so now I'm trying to finalize my plans before it gets too late. A friend who travels to London frequently mentioned that it might not be best place for a tourist-y visit. It seems like a good neighborhood, and so I guess I'm just looking for confirmation. I'm traveling with a teenager, this will actually be the second half of our trip, the first half will be with a group. Thanks for the info!!

My friend and I stayed at the Morgan last fall, loved it, and will stay there again. It is around the corner from the British Museum, within easy walking distance to theaters, and close to Underground stations. Can't imagine a better location. It may not be close to where you want to go during the Olympics so that could be a problem.

We don't really have a firm itinerary yet, we'll be going to the Olympics earlier in the trip with a group so this will just be a more relaxing stay, maybe a couple of day trips and wander around the city. I just figured with the cost of airfare, we might as well extend the trip after the group leaves and enjoy ourselves. The hotel in Kensington was the Vicarage, came to just over $300/night. The Morgan sounds better and better with each posting, so glad I found this forum!

For what you say you want to do in that time, the Bloomsbury area in general (all around the Morgan) would be fine. Some big attractions within walking distance and good public transport links, and plenty of "local" (as opposed to blandly generic chain offerings) interest shops, restaurants, and so on. One of my favourite areas to visit (speaking as a Londoner).

Since you know quite a bit about London, you might offer the OP YOUR idea of moderate. Just a suggestion.

I prefer South Kensington for all the good transport options, good shops and services so nearby and walking distanceto V&A , natural histoey museums,Saatchi galley shopping along Kings Road And Harrods < I have always managed to find good rates on londontown.com Paid under 90 GBP for the Mill, Gloucester last month and aam paying the same rate for our March aPRIL TRIP. aCTUALLY THE bAILEYS RIGHT NEXT DOOR WAS EVEN A BIT LESS EXPENSIVE. dON'T KNOW ABOUT oLYMPIC RATES THOUGH. Also got a very good rate at the Grosvenor Kensington this past spring. It is being renovated right now and I can't find what their new rates will be for our spring trip

There are many small hotels on Belgrave street which is 10 minutes from Victoria station. It seems to be a very safe area and extremely handy for most things

I've always stayed in Bloomsbury.

Many B&Bs as well as hotels. Two I've stayed at:

www.harlingfordhotel.com
http://www.theetoncollection.co.uk/c...spx?pageID=410

British Museum is right there. Shopping on Oxford St easy walk. One day, I walked to City then St Paul's. Another day, walked to Covent Garden then Trafalgar Sq.

Good Tube access. Heathrow is a direct shot. I landed at Gatwick, so needed one tube ride after train in from airport.

Lots of restaurants on Charlotte St, good Thai one on Store St.

Parks around there, area was not particularly busy or noisy.

Thanks for the great info. I've booked at both the Ridgemount in Bloomsbury and the Sloane Square Hotel in Chelsea/Belgravia area and now have to decide which one to go with. Very hard choice!

Here is a link to my trip report, the first week was spent in London at The Morgan Hotel. No way is it "out of the way".

Good luck with your planning.

Maudie, GREAT trip report and I haven't finished yet! I don't know why my friend thought Bloomsbury would be out of the way. As long as where I'm at is safe. Unfortunately the Morgan was booked when I inquired, they recommended the Ridgemount as an alternative. I do have quite a lot of daily planning to take care of, I just have to see what we are going to accomplish in our first half of the trip. I know the basic group bus tour and Thames river cruise is included, and we're doing one Olympic event and the Harry Potter movie studio tour. It will be nice exploring on our own though after the group leaves!

The Rathbone Hotel in Rathbone Street is conveniently located between Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street tube stations, is couple roads back from Oxford Street on a quiet corner. It's a moderate 4 star category so might be overbudget.
The Academy in Gower Street is another moderately priced option in a good location.

Thanks Kate, glad you are enjoying it. Hopefully it may be of some help to you.
No sure if this is your thing or not but I have read a couple of good reports on this place. It's a little further than The Morgan but still near Holborn tube. http://www.fleetriverbakery.com/ look for the "rooms" tab on the side. Just thought I would give you the home page with the goodies on it!!!
