Looking for beach hotel near Athens and Nafplion

We (2 adults and three children 18,15 &12) are traveling to Greece for 8 days starting June 1st. I am looking for places to stay in Athens (3 nights) and Nafplion (5 nights). I would like to find a nice hotel on or near the beach at both locations in case it is hot and for some relaxation. Any recomendations?

Kurt, If you are going to Greece for the beaches I would not recommend the two spots you have choosen. There are beautiful beaches elsewhere on the Peleponnese but not really around Nafplion (or at least I haven't found them).

Nafplion does not have a beach near the town. There is a small spit of sand around the headland but by 11am it is in the shade. If you want to see Nafplion and still want to stay at a beach you might consider staying in Tolo -- it is close (about 15 minutes away by car) but its beach is long and thin and PACKED with tourists.

In Athens you will be quite far away from the historical sites if you decide to stay out at the beaches and spend allot of time commuting in Athens traffic. There is so much to see in Athens that I would recommend finding a hotel in the centre with a pool. You can always head out to the beach for half a day if you feel the need for a beach.

Rita:
Where do you recommend to stay in Athens? Looking for a 2-3 star as location and being clean are the priorities. Thank you.

Dottie,

the hotel I stay at is a 3 or 4 star. It's called the Herodian Hotel and it is just outside of the Plaka area close to a new metro stop. I think that they have a website (but I don't have it) so I would try a search.

The Herodian is a good clean hotel (a little better than basic) with AC and a rooftop view of the Acropolis. If you book it try to get a room that does NOT face onto the street. Ask for one facing the courtyard or the acropolis.

If you book it try to get a room that does NOT face onto the street as the traffic noise is loud even with the doors closed. Ask for one facing the courtyard or the acropolis. Two years ago we paid $115 Canadian for a double.

Thanks Rita
I'm just now beginning to plan this trip for Spring 2003 or this November. I know we want to do Athens, some of the Islands, Ephesus, and Istanbul. So, if you have any suggestions on which season to go, places to stay, or which airline to fly and when to purchase tickets, I would appreciate your advice.

Hi Kurt,

If you want to stay around the beachs, I would try to stay in Glyfada(17km/10mi from center Athens), or Vouliagmeni (25km/15mi from center Athens). These are where the well-off Athenians live. I have friends that live there and comute to work in downtown Athens by the subway/bus system but it is easier if you have a car. The best hotel there is Astir Palace Vouliagmeni with it's private beach.
In Nauplio, I stayed a few nights in Tolo (11km/7mi from Nauplio) and commuted to Nauplio by bus (10minutes) which had buses that run every half hour. I would recommend Tolo Hotel. It was resonable and the beach was gorgeous. The area is a beach resort and there are tours that can take you to the islands of Hydra and Spetses which are offered from the hotel. I really enjoyed Tolo and Nauplio.

Hi,
In Athens, the Athens Gate is very good and central. In Tolo, the Paradise Lost is excellent, as is the Tolo Hotel. I was in Tolo June 2000 and June 2001. It is very cheap with a nice beach and is very convenient to Nafplio.

Theodora:

Astir Palace looks a little pricey. Any others you may reccomend? What about the Armonia?

I found some hotels in Glyfada - the London Hotel or the Miranda. Any comments?

Hi Kurt,

Glyfada is a very pricey area. Back when the airport used to be there, I had a friend who had stayed at the Miranda in 1999 and had liked it so much that he highly recommended it to me.
