Has anyone stayed a good hotel in the Black Forest? I have been recommende one in Triberg, but they have not responded to my request. We plan to spend at least 3 days touring the area and prefer to stay in one hotel the whole time. Thanks

Triberg is a bit of a tour bus stop; in high season, the tour buses and through traffic choke the main road passing through the middle of town. I haven't stayed there, but I don't think I'd want to, particularly. Visit for an afternoon if you want to visit the waterfall. A far more pleasant spot is Titisee, to the south. The lake and mountain scenery here is really quite fine. It also has its share of cuckoo clock shops, but the overall ambience of the place compensates for the (somewhat lighter) impact of tourism here. Buses have to park outside, so as not to clog the town with diesel exhaust and traffic. Lots of hotels have a lake view. I thought Triberg was lovely,but will admit I was there at an off-season time. The Romantik Hotel chain has several hotels in the Black Forest, and also has one in Triburg. You might check their website. Enjoy!

The more I travel in the Black forest, the more I come to realize that is really two areas: north and south. <BR> <BR>Baden-Baden is the "capital" of the north, and I have a growing list of favorite places in around the Hoschstrasse Schwarzwald: Appenweier, Oberkirch, Baiersbronn, Neuweier and others. Baden-Baden has a very different flavor from "small town" Black Forest, and for a dress-up casino night, has almost as much to recommend it as a similar night in Monte Carlo (although you might argue that neither one is worthy of your time on a limited-time trip to Europe). <BR> <BR>In the south, we enjoyed the town of Schonach and recommend www.isdd.de/bergfriede/index_e.html - - the town itslef has a website at www.schonach.de with other info and lodging choices as well. <BR> <BR>In both north and south, you will find that it takes a lot of time to drive from point A to point B - - and of course, this is part of the appeal. <BR> <BR>Best wishes, <BR> <BR>Rex

A good German language site for Black Forest hotels is at &lt;www.sbo.de/hotels&gt; <BR>They list 34 of the nicest towns in the Black Forest and a click on any name will bring up a range of accommodations. For example I clicked on Titisee, since it was recommended by <BR>Russ and it is certainly in a beautiful area, and found the Schwarzwaldgasthaus there. It seems very nice at $60 a night for their best double. But there are many more options at higher or lower prices. <BR> <BR>Their fax number is 0049 07651/88194 if you wanted to contact them. <BR> <BR>

Just returned from the area -- we stayed at a farmhouse in Gutach and it was a great experience. (Fresh eggs picked up that morning!) (55 DM for the 2 of us.) No need to book ahead this time of year -- lots of accomodations and this way if you like a place, you will easily find accomodation. Be sure to stop in Gutach and visit their outdoor museum of reconstructed Black Forest houses -- only place where you will still see original thatched roofs.

We used Titisee as the starting point for our bike tour of the Rhine and Mosel, staying 2 nights at the Gastezimmer Haus am Tannenhain. We had a couple of nice dinners at Restaurant Seeblick and enjoyed a walk around the "see". If time allows, trips to Lake Constance, Freiburg, Briesach and Neuf Brisach are recommended, and for a stretch, Colmar and the Alsace are not far away.
