Lone Traveller
Hiya,
This site all very new to me, but I was wondering if someone could give me some advice? I am wanting to travel to Prague roundabout the 5th feb, for about 5 days, but will be travelling alone. Will I be safe enough? Are all the attractions still operating in February? I am planning to stay in a hostel so should meet some people through doing that? Any help appreciated!
Thanks

The weekly "will it be safe?" thread. Once again, I'm still waiting for someone to seriously say "No, SO STAY HOME!!". Of course it will be safe as long as you exercise some NORMAL & USUAL precautions. Have a Great Trip!!! Mike

Suggestion: Search for threads about the Czech Rep. where amp322 has posted. I think she has been to Prague many times, usually alone, and you may find her comments especially helpful.
I've often traveled alone, but never to the Czech Republic, so I can't answer your questions.

Unfortunately, it isn't surprising that there are frequent "will I be safe?" posts on this board given the fact that we also seen numerous posts about areas in various cities to avoid because some nervous nellie has "heard" they are "unsafe."
I've been to Prague several times and I really don't think ypou have to worry about safety of life and limb. I would beward of possible pickpockets in crowded situations (the Metro); would secure my valuables in any sort of transient/hostal situation; beware of the infamous crooked taxicabs in that city (get them to aree on a price in advance of any ride); beware of people posing as either policemen or "immigration officials" who suddenly approach you on the street, etc.
The instances I've cited are rare but they have all been reported at various times.
The main attractions such as the Castle complex should be open; the "old town" square area and the astrological clock will definitely be on-view; the Loretto, the Infant, the various religious sites, church interiors, museums, etc.
I'd worry the MOST about how you'll possibly see it all rather than safety.
Enjoy your trip.

Prague is a very safe city - there are some scammers (taxi drivers needs to be managed) but no danger to life and limg unless you are foolhardy (no you can;t go home with some wild-eyed sranger you just met in a bar at 2am).
Everything major will be open and the music scene is especially busy in the winter. Do check out the Town Hall for info on the huge number of concerts and activities available. Much is of a very high caliber - and way less than it would cost in the US or western europe.
