London(ish) calling. 33C at 10:00am!

Ok I am a bit north of London actually but it was already 33C at 10am.

I care not because I am in an air conditioned office and my dinner tonight will consist mostly of ice cream

Wow. It never got that hot in the five years we lived there. Enjoy the warmth!

This is a great illustration why asking about weather 6 months before a trip is pointless -- nobody can predict a heat wave or a cold spell.

They are only first now getting around to air condition the underground after decades of insisting it can't be done. Once the heat and humidity settle in there, well it is just miserable. At least in NYC, all the subway lines have functional a/c as do the buses.

They are able to use airconned trains on certain tube lines at the moment - not all of them.

The NYC subway trains may have AC, but I don't recall the stations having it?

I was in London for a heatwave in 2006 and the papers had headlines about the likelihood of people dying on the tube! I was staying in a place without AC and was miserable. Am hoping this will be long over before I get there the end of August.

No - NYC subway stations don't have AC - since they are vented through the outside (all those gratings on the sidewalk). By end of summer the trains are fairly cool but stations are like the black hole of Calcutta.

I don't take the subway in summer - just bus - or more often nice cool cabs.

As for all of the europeans who make fun of americans and AC - you are getting what we have most of the summer and can now see why we need it.

I remember as a small child when AC was not yet universal my mom sending me and my B to the movies for the day to cool down when temps were in the 90s. (While we lived in an apartment the wiring - 1920s building - wouldn't support AC. They moved to a house and put ACs in the whole thing - plus a backyard pool - a couple of years later.

Think of the physics laws about the conservation of energy. NYC subway cars have a/c and it is fairly effective. But where does the heat go? That is why the stations indeed become very very hot but when the train arrives, it makes the a/c almost seem more effective.

I can't think of a year we were in London in summer when we didn't have a heat wave of sorts.

As for the AC on the Tube, I remember the Piccadilly line, at least years ago when I lived there, had A/C.

The worst, for me anyway, was the Central line. When I lived there, they had the old cars with lots of venting through windows that would open. So necessary in summer heading home from St Paul's.

Then, after I left, new trains were installed that had zero venting, like a can. Horrible!

I've prepped myself this summer for a car with AC and AC in the Liverpool hotel. Won't be so lucky at my friends' homes, but we can manage.

I seem to remember that the new London buses have no opening windows - or am i imagining that?

Anyway, come to Cornwall - it's a very peasant 20C.

.....and in weather news, it is 30 degrees in Pendle this afternoon and it was the same in Todmorden at lunchtime. A bit cloudy and muggy.

During the heat wave of 2003, when it was 35 degrees outside, the air conditioning failed on some of the German ICE trains. Their large windows do not open. My mother and I were in a crowded second class car and it was pretty close to unbearable, esp for my 70 something mother. I overheard one train staffer say quietly to another that they got the AC partially working in two of the first class cars. I grabbed Mom and bolted to first class, found a conductor and paid the fare upgrade on the spot. We were the first to relocate but within 15 minutes, every FC seat had been taken by people fleeing the second class sauna.

The heat is more bearable with shorts snd sandals than a suit and two rollers. While enjoying a Irish stout beef pot pie the woman in the table behind me remarked 'London would be far richer if we had this weather all time'

If you say so....

Luckily, my flat's not on the sunny side, so it's naturally cool inside. And I'm not having to commute anywhere.

Looks like it will settle back to normal summer temperatures fairly soon.

Sweltering again today - it actually feels worse than in the week despite the official weather sites claiming it is cooler. Also BBQ mania means I can't have any windows open at the back. Send the red cross with paddling pools and mojitos please.
