London Tube ID
Hi all, I'm new to this so if this has been answered before, please be patient. One of my tour books says to bring along (to London) an exta passport picture in order to get the tube pass. Another book tells me to have my picture taken at one of the MANY quick photos stands located in many tube stations. Who do I believe? Thanks for input.

Mary,
You've got three options regarding photos for London's tube passes. The requirement calls for a passport sized photo. It does not specifically have to be a passport photo, merely one of that size. You can have an extra passport photo taken or you can have a photo made in one of the photo booths at many underground stations or you can use a regular photo from your personal collection that is cut down to passport size and has a readily identifiable image of yourself. Take your choice!

Since I'm not sure where you live if you have a Walgreen's in the area they can do "on the spot" passport size photos, or you can simply take your own with your own camera. As long as the photo is passport sized (cut it down) and shows your face/head clearly it's no problem, we used photos like that. Incidentally your photos are good for many years in case you go back. They do not affix them to the pass that goes through the underground turnstiles, they are put on a separate ID card. I'd take one with you,it's less hassle than taking it there and one less thing to worry about doing and/or having the correct change for as the machines in the Underground stops need that.

Mary -
Depending on how long you will be in London - you may benefit from a London Visitor card instead of a Tube Pass - check into the differences before you buy. the LVC does not need a photo and is good on both the bus & tube.
do a search on this forum for LONDON VISITOR TRAVEL CARD where I put some info on another question.

good luck.

I agree with Debbie on the London Visitor Travelcard. It's good for buses and the tube. The cost of a zone 1 & 2(covering all major attractions) card ranges from $22 for three days to $32 for seven. You can get it by calling 1-888-BRITRAIL. No photo necessary.

Mary,
Go to www.londontransport.co.uk and you'll have all of your questions answered authoritatively. Recognize that the "tube pass" is also good on the red, double-decker buses which are really the way to get about London and see something more than the inside of a tunnel!

Wes is correct again. The requirement is passport "size", not other passport picture requirements. I just went thru recent snap shots of my family, and chose the ones, when cut to passport "size" dimensions, gave reasonably good facial view of each. Total cost for pictures = $0.

I used the Visitor card on all the buses. We stayed near Victoria station, which happens to be the main bus depot, so the buses were actually easier to use than the tube.
It was great - little mini tours of the city every time we went somewhere.

I also found the bus stops very easy to use - good size signs at each stop , stating which buses stop there, and what the stops for those routes are.

We did use the tube for some things - we got the full 7 (or 6?) zone pass, and took it all the way to the end to see the Royal Air Force Museum. Cool if you are into planes.

Good luck - post with more ?
Debbie
