London Tube Derailment: Why i Take the Bus
Breaking news has there has been a serious derailment on the London Tube, trapping a few hundred passengers for two hours deep underground - no fatalities but scores of minor injuries i guess so thank the Queen for that.
Ironic comes at time of terrorist fears and approaching 7-7-7
But a few years ago i rode the Tube several times before the day i was to return to States and the next day there was a system wide blackout or London wide blackout that stranded folks down under for some long periods.
Then i thought to be on a typically packed tube train in a power failure or derailment would be no fun - i've rediscovered the bus system which goes everywhere - is cheaper and you can see lots from the upper deck.
Buses you don't have to navigate series of stairs, passageways, stuffed trains, etc. and buses inevitably stop right in front of where you are going.
In London - don't neglect the fabulous bus service. Get a bus map at any tube station. A day bus pass is i guess about 3.50 pounds - a bargain and good in all zones of great London.

Bellini, just what is an Oyster Card? Can I get one in Edinburgh? I'll be there for three weeks in September and will have to ride the bus at least twice a day to and from City Center. Will an Oyster Card save me money and be easier than trying to come up with the correct amount each day?
PalenQ, I'm very sorry to crash your post, but I'm one of the people on here that cannot post questions right now. Seems Fodor's is not really interested in getting that problem fixed either.

Oystercard is London specific.
for Edinburgh you buy a day ticket for £2.50 on Lothian buses - though you might not spend that much as bus fares are £1 per trip
If you are in the centre of Edinburgh I doubt if you need a bus ticket at all - unless you go to see Brittania or out to Rosslyn

Dallas,
Do you see a white strip under the orange menu options in the fodors banner along the top of the page? If so, try pointing your cursor inside the white bit underneath and between "restaurants" and "cruises", then hold down your left mouse button and drag the cursor down the page. This should bring the post a new message and search facilities up the page. I've had the same problem for months now and this works for me hope it works for you

I'm starting to agree with you, PalenQ with some of the hassles I just had with the tube.
Had to give up coming back from Waterloo & trying to change to a Circle or District line which wasn't running (again) & the mob scene at Green Park was horrendous. Gave up & caught a cab.

Thanks, Xenos, for the suggestion, but clicking on the white strip just pulls up the Europe forum. Only a very small strip of Europe shows above the choose location box. Nothing seems to help, but I do appreciate your help.
