London transportation
Does anyone know approximately how much it would cost to take a taxi from Victoria Station to the Thistle Bloomsbury hotel in Bloomsbury?

I think it would be so much easier than schlepping my bag onto the underground.

Thanks.

I took a taxi (actually more a private car service) from Victoria to a town just outside north London and the cost was $30 - this was in 1999. I can't imagine the rates have gone up. I would guess at $15-$20 for your trip. I agree, dragging luggage thru the tube would be awful.

Hi Sharon.. here is some info to help you make an informed decision. *smile*

It is less than 5 miles from Victoria Mainline Station to Bloomsbury Way.
The fare depends on day and time of your travel .. and not only the length of your trip , but the amount of time sittexpect to pay higher fares.ing in traffic will make your fare higher.
Weekday fares between the hours of 6 AM and 8 PM are calculated in the following manner:
£1.40 for the first 390 yards OR the first 75 seconds of your trip
THEN £1.80 per mile OR 30p per minute of your ride.
When your fare has reached a total of £12.00 THEN your will pay £ 2.55 per mile OR 45p per minute.
Expect to pay higher fares on weekdays between 8PM and 6 AM, all day Saturday and Sunday, and on holidays.
If you decide to go by Tube you will certainly pay less than you would for a taxi . You can go from Victoria Sation to either the Holborn Station or to the Tottenham Court Station.. the ride will take you about 18 minutes and you will have to change Tube lines no matter which of the 2 Tube stations you decide to arrive at.. then you will have to , indeed , schlep your bag up the steps to the street level and then haul it along behind you down the crowded sidewalks to your hotel.
I vote for splurging on a taxi ride...you can recoup the extra £10 you will spend on getting to your hotel . Instead of having an expensive dinner one evening, have an expensive lunch instead. *smile*

I really, really do know how to spell and how to type.. but my computer INSISTS on sending my messages BEFORE I have time to check them for errors. ( Yeah, right. *S*)
I intended to say that the length of time sitting in traffic will increase the taxi fare.. Duh! And as for the other typos.. mea culpa.

I would ESTIMATE £15-20, more if it is a busy time of day, less if it's not! Unless I were on a very tight budget indeed (which I imagine you aren't from the hotel you are staying in), I would not lug suitcases around the Tube having just stepped off a plane! Life, and holidays, are too short and believe me, a taxi will save you a lot of STRESS and walking. Make sure you get a black cab at least once during your visit - the drivers are often great characters, and it's fun to sit in the back and watch the buildings and people go by (often faster than the traffic is moving, sadly). After that though, when you are unencumbered by baggage, stick to the Tube as it's usually faster and certainly vastly cheaper. Try and do some WALKING too though - this is even more efficient if you only need to go a few stops!
