London to York, Edinburgh & British Open
Need all of your help with itinerary in mid-July. Spending 3 nights in London and then tentatively plan the following:
Train to York for 1 night
Drive or train to Edinburgh for 2 nights
Drive to Troon and go to British Open for the day. Need suggestions for that evening and following day.
Then on to Bath (am I crazy?) and spend 2 nights in Bath prior to return to London. Can I get the express bus (NE) to Heathrow on Sunday AM and make my 2:30 p.m flight to US? Thanks.

You can do most of the journeys by train comfortably. York to Edinburgh is an easy 2.5 hour ride. Troon is served by rail via Glasgow. It's a long haul from there to Bath and I suggest you take Easyjet flight from Glasgow to Bristol, and bus from there to Bath. There are reasonable fares still available for July 15 and 16, but fewer and more expensive at weekend. Best to stay in Glasgow as hotels near Troon will be booked up and very expensive. From Bath, the easiest way is to take a morning train to Reading and get a bus from there, or to Paddington and Heathrow Express.

I was interested in driving the leg from York to Edinburgh to see all the sights. Should I buy a drive/rail pass or just do the rail? The rates are bargain basement on Easy Jet. Will they allow my luggage? Thanks for your help!

Toto,
Don't know if this will fit in with your plans or not, but you might be interested to know that Scotrail usually lay on all-inclusive package during the Open. If previous years are anything to go by this will include return rail travel from Edinburgh to Troon (via Glasgow) & entrance to the course.

You can drive York-Edinburgh if you like. There are indeed many interesting places to stop, but it's a four-hour drive with single carriageway north of Morpeth. I suggest stopping at Durham and Bamburgh. Easyjet allow 20 kg of checked luggage.
