I'd like to know if it would be practical to stay in Pangbourne while visiting London. Is it too far out to be very practical?
I'll be in London four days and don't know if it would be too much time wasted on the trains. Also, does anyone have any idea what the rail fare would be? I cna't seem to find out on the rail sites.
Thanks for any help.
London to Pangbourne, Reading?

Hi - Pangbourne is a lovely area but you will need to take a train to Reading and then a Fast link to Paddington (this takes about half an hour which is super) London if you want to move quickly. There are 2 trains an hour to Reading (Mon - Sat anywat - don't know about Sundayd) - these seem to run quite well. I think the full price from Readint to London is about £24 for an adult, plus about £2.80 for the Pangbourne-Reading bit. However, if you travel after 10am this fare goes down to about £10 plus a few pounds if you want to add in an underground ticket, which is excellent value. You can travel direct on a slow train from Pangbourne to Paddington, this stops in many towns and is much slower. If you are on a budget as regards where to stay, as English hotesl can be quite expensive, you might like to think of going on the next stop further on than Pangbourne and stay at the youth hostel there. This would really cut down on the accommodation costs. Josie
You will find timetable details at http://www.railtrack.co.uk/. The journey takes about 50 minutes to an hour and it is not necessary to change at Reading.
Another site is www.thetrainline.com which also gives booking details.
Standard day return will be £21.90 (travel at any time). Cheap day return is £10.70 - travelling after morning rush hour.
Thanks very much for the help. I have friends who live in Pangbourne, but didn't know if it was reasonable to stay out that far. If the day ticket is under GBP11 after ther rush hour, it may very well be worth it.
Thanks again. Lee
hi, is this still valid?
i checked the prices on trainline.com but the fares are 15gbp one-way (and its off-peak!)
so what have i done wrong here?
hope someone can help me
ccc11: "is this still valid?"
nope -- but what else costs the same as it did 10 years ago?
That is how old this thread is (How the heck did you find this anyway?)
"i checked the prices on trainline.com but the fares are 15gbp one-way"
If you want to travel one way, then that's the right fare.
But is that what you want to do? There's no material difference between the price of an offpeak single and an offpeak return. Single's £15.40, return's £15.50.
Peak time singles are £18. Earliest London-bound weekday offpeak train's around 0915
holy jesus! haha, i mustve been really tired when i wrote this.
i thought it was from january 2010 so i was like what the f happened with the prices?
oh boy...
