There are two services from Cambridge to London - one to Kings Cross, the other to Liverpool Street. The latter is cheaper though slower
The two universal answers to your questions:
1. Use the travel planner on the London 2012 website to decide which route (Lpool St or KX) makes better sense for you. If your venue is the Olympic Park, KX is almost certainly better, but given the likely congestion around KX for getting the Javelin at St Pancras, Lpool St might make a great deal more sense for venues south of the Thames
2. Then ask the ticket seller about the best deal for today (Aug 5). But if you can, go to http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/london2012/ for special deals for ticket holders. I don't think these deals can be bought at ticket offices, but I might be wrong
