London Student Discount

Going to be in London October 21-25th.Have been trying to figure out how much it will cost to get into the attractions we want to see. I will have my 16 year old son, who's a high school student with me, and I'm a University of Phoenix online student (hardly young). What do we need to do to get the student discount prices? Does my son need to show his high school ID? Does he need a picture ID? And what about me? I have a student ID from U of P but it's not a picure ID.

From what I can recall, the discounts you'll find in London are "youth" discounts rather than "student" discounts. And a lot of the "youth" discounts are available to those under 15 (or is it 15 and under?), such as on the train.

Many student discounts are available no matter the age. My wife (not typical university age) is a student at a UK university and has no problem getting many discounts at popular sites (like Kew gardens just last week).

Look for the listing of "concessions" on the tariff board for the attraction. This is usually explained on the board whether it means students, pensioners, job seekers, etc.

I don't think your son will have a problem with his ID (as it's more plausible he is a student) but you may have more difficulty without a picture ID. It's certainly worth bringing your IDs and perhaps to try to get a picture ID if it is not too much trouble. Even if you only get one discount it is worth carrying the card.

It's easy to see the student rate on the websites of various attractions but unfortunately I don't think there is a standard rule to tell you ahead of your trip whether or not your IDs will be accepted. I would budget for full price and hope for the best.

Hey! I even got a discount on my hair cut as I am a mature part time university student here in Wales (but not too mature to not need a haircut..lol)

The secret is to keep taking classes and remain a student until you reach 60. That way you can go right from student discount to senior discount and never pay full cost!

All you need to get the student discounts is a student card with a picture and an expiry date. My hubby and I did that while we were in London a few weeks ago and had no problem!

Blondiepopo,
The student discounts in London are excellent and often not limitied by age.

During my long years as a graduate student I was a great fan of the last minute theater discounts and have picked up cheap tickets at the box office on the day of the show for lots of great plays. Often they'll give you the best seats still available for 15-20 pounds.

Hope that helps.
