Can anyone recommend a place for lunch near the British Musuem? I've heard that the place inside the musuem is expensive.
thanks

There are several restaurants/cafes inside the museum. Only one - the Court restaurant at the top of the Great Court - is expensive
http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/visiting/eat.aspx lists them all
There are also several pubs and sandwich shops nearby - but I usually eat in the museum.
Yes, the Court restaurant is expensive (I did a splurge there last time I visited London) but the food is very very good. Not as expensive as many other restaurants in London where the food is not so good, though.
I do agree w/ kenderina - the Court is "expensive" but good value IMHO. But if it doesn't fit in your budget - the other cafes in the museum are cheaper.
The Wagamama near the British Museum isn't too bad. There's also a good fish and chips restaurant fairly close, but I can't think of the name (North Sea Fish House is what comes to mind). There are a lot of London hands here, so ask around. I'm sure there's also a Pret-a-Manger near the British Museu, and that's my favorite sandwich chain.
But I've always had good luck with the restaurant inside the museum as well, and I like it because you can get a fairly decent-priced hot lunch there and then have something light for dinner.

That's the North Sea Fish Bar and Restaurant in Leigh St which is nearby (and recommended).
It has a take away and a nice restauirant.
Make sure yopu get the mushy peas. And a wally.
The pub opposite - The Norfolk Arms - is a good pub and has good food.
Wagamama! Just bought their "cookbook" for my sons birthay present!

I always go to Wagamama when in that area. That branch is on Streatham Street.
thank you for the suggestions. The musuem cafe sounds like a good plan if it is raining - if it is nice weather, then perhaps it would be a good idea to take a musuem break and select one of the other suggestions.
A couple of years ago we ate at le bistro Savoir Faire on New Oxford Street. If you walk to the end of Bloomsbury Street and turn left, it is a small restaurant on the left just past McDonald's. We really liked the food.
It's a small place, and we had dinner. I'm not sure if it is open at lunch.

If you're in the mood for Italian, Il Fornello on Southampton Row is very good and reasonably priced.
If you come out of the front entrance to the British Museum, turn left to Southampton Row, cross at the zebra crossing and turn left. It's just up the street.
