London pub with best atmosphere?

London pub with best atmosphere?
We'll be visiting London in June for the first time and my husband is looking forward to visiting some of the older-style pubs with all the great atmosphere (not to mention the ales and lagers). Care to share a favorite? We hope to avoid the more updated and electronically enhanced pubs.

Unfortunately, my experience with London pubs has been far inferior compared to country pubs where the food and the beer are great. If you try any ale or bitter make sure it comes from a pump rather than the usual type spigot used in the U.S. It gives the ale a completely different texture and taste, mmm. I'm a sucker for steak and ale pie too.

If you mean Historic Pubs by your inference to "older-style" you have so many to choose from. Many London pubs have a fascinating history and decor. Whether it is a beamed medieval,or has "snobscreens", or a display of antiques the choice is wide.
The one often chosen is Ye olde Cheshire Cheese where I have had a meal.
It was like going into a rabbits warren and we sat somewhere down in a basement.
Found it slightly chlostrophobic but not enough to spoil my meal.
We took a bus ride to The Spaniards Inn which is Dick Turpin's old haunt and had a delightful meal in the garden.
We tried to have something to eat at the famous "one and only" The Blind Beggar Tavern in the East End but they had stopped serving lunch as it was around 3pm. Got the TShirt though.
Others worthy of note are:
Fitzroy Tavern - meeting place for writers and artists.
Trafalgar Tavern - frequented by Charles Dickens.
Enjoy!

There are still some great old traditional English Pubs scattered about London.I always make it a point to explore them on every trip.Unfortunately I do think that the Spainiards Inn at Hampstead Heath is now closed,at least it was last year when I was in the area.
You might want to check out two of my favorite pubs.
The "Lamb' in Bloomsbury,and a little farther afield but with a view of the Thames the "Prospect of Whitby"

Ah, good to see others on this board, who appreciate "interesting" pubs in London. My favourites, the "Lamb" with its snobscreens, "Flask" at Highgate,
"Settle Inn" at Archway, "prospect of Whitby" ( a must)....however, most of my favourites are out in the countryside, in the little villages, you know, small village, with a manor house, local village pub, church nearby, running stream under an old packhorse bridge (beats London pubs every time)
