London Hotels $200-$250 wanted
We are a 50-something couple making a trip to Britain in September or October. We are looking for a hotel with elevator, ensuite bathroom, queen or king-sized beds and possibly breakfast for about $200 and no more than $250. We liked staying in Bloomsbury on our last trip almost 10 years ago and had an amazing air and hotel deal. I have looked at Radisson Edwardian, Red Carnation, Hilton but all are $300 and up. The Grange Hotel chain may offer some options but some are rated in the 300s out of 1000 hotels on Trip Advisor so not the greatest ratings.
If you have a recommendation I would love to hear it. Thank you.

Scootoir, my favourite is the Sloane Square hotel. It has a lift, is right on Sloane Square across from the Tube station. The Royal Court Theatre is there also, plus great dining and shopping options.
We ate breakfast in the hotel (it was not included) once but found the breakfast next door at The Botanist to be better.
It is a little above your price, a double is 171.75 pounds.
We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, the room was small but that is London for you. However, it was beautifully decorated and the beds very comfortable. The bathroom was smallish but modern and all was very clean.
We were there over a weekend and had a deal that included dinner in their restaurant. Well, dinner was a very different story to breakfast! It was delicious and the service was great. We liked it so much we splashed out and ate there again another night.
Have a look at their website, it might suit you as well.

Academy Hotel in Bloomsbury might fit the bill. Good location, nice rooms, good breakfast. From there, easy walk to Tube, British Museum, restaurants, pubs, shopping. Also walked to St Pauls as well as Covent Garden from there.
I stayed there in 2009.

Scootoir, you might check out the STRAND PALACE hotel, minuets from Trafalgar Square and within walking distance of many sites including those on the river, theater district, the City, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's, Westminster etc.
The Strand is a vintage hotel with newly refurbished rooms- serves an excellent breakfast. But no AC in rooms - if that is important. On past trips to London, I had stayed near Marble Arch and in Soho, but the Strand was by far the most convenient. I paid $200 for a single in the summer of 2011.
No doubt, you will receive many other excellent suggestions. Enjoy London...

Michel_Paris, The Academy Hotel might work for us. The rate comes in at 155 pounds including breakfast and VAT. My only hesitation in booking would be assuring that our room was not more than one flight up since there is no elevator.
Raincitygirl, Although the Sloane Square Hotel is above our budget we may have to spend more to get what we want. Do you recall the room number you had? Some of the reviews complain of noise from the air conditioners and we would like to be away from that.

I have stayed st the Park Plaza County Hall twice. I believe it is in your price range. It's pretty new and very conveniently located-next to Waterloo Station. Nice staff. They do have a breakfast, but it might be extra-not sure. I haven't checked the rates since last summer, though, so it may be more. But it's worth checking.

latedaytraveler, A king bedded room "without a view" at the Strand Palace comes in at our budget. That might be fine if it means no street noise but I am concerned it will be dark. Are you familiar with this type of room?

Look at the Park International Hotel on Cromwell Road. Check to see the room is one of the remodeled ones, but we stayed there a few years ago and were quite comfortable. It isn't a modern building, if that is what you are looking for.
It is in walking distance of the V&A and Harrods if you like walking and is only a couple of blocks from the Gloucester Road tube stop.
Have you tried the Millennium Bailey's? I love it, and it is right across the street from the G. Road tube stop. (South Kensington is my favorite place to stay.)

I am only familiar with the single room I had at the STRAND PALACE which did not have a view. Let’s face it, if we want to stay in the heart of the city with accessibility to popular sites – there is going to be noise! When I stayed there last summer, a building was being renovated across the street so there were construction sounds during the day.
Also, since the hotel is on a main thoroughfare, the only “view” is of traffic and the entrance to the toney Hotel Savoy directly across the street.
Florida1 makes a good suggestion about PARK PLAZA COUNTY HALL, a very large modern hotel on the South Bank near the London Eye and Westminster Bridge. After I left the STRAND PALACE, I checked into that hotel since it was the starting point for my Globus tour to Cornwall and Devon.
However, I think that STAND PALACE is more convenient for accessing a greater number of sites in central London. You might click on my name to glance at my trip report “Solo in London, Museums, and a Private Tour of Parliament” which I wrote last summer. I mention both hotels in the post.
Please let us know what you decide....

I stayed at Bailey's almost 30 years ago with my cousins when it was owned by another company and had not been refurbished. My cousins and I still laugh over what an odd place it was then with the breakfast room that was a cross between the Mad Tea Party and Oliver Twist, the shower that drenced the entire bathroom and some peculiarities in service. Glad to know you enjoyed it. I will look into it . . . my cousins might think me crazy.

Scootoir, I'll have to dig around to find my trip journal for the room number. Our room faced onto the square and it was nice to be able to look out and see what was going on out there.
THere was no noise from air conditioners but at night there was a bit of noise from people leaving the bar, but nothing that prevented us from sleeping.
One night (we were there for 6) we woke up at about 3:00 a.m. to hear someone playing the bagpipes out on the street, that was pretty funny actually and didn't last long.
I loved the area, great for walking and people watching, shopping or just "window licking" as the French say. Lots of good restaurants right near the hotel and down on the King's Road as well. I loved the hotel but I am partial to smaller, charming, boutiquey hotels. Staying in a big chain hotel just doesn't suit me.

Have you looked at the Sanctuary House Hotel? It's in a convenient location near Westminster Abbey and St. James Park. They have rooms with king beds, and are right around the upper limit of your budget. They also have a lift. I looked again at the website, and the price at Sanctuary House does include full English breakfast. They also have some good weekend deals, but don't know if they will still be available in September and October.
