London hotel help
Dear all,
Firstly please accept my apologies for revisiting this topic yet again.
My fiance and I will be visiting London for three nights from 16th to 19th June. We want to stay in the Knightsbridge/South Kensington area and after looking on various sites have come up with the following combinations of hotels and prices (all shown inclusive of VAT).
Basil Street Hotel
Double room = £496.25 (2 breakfasts included)
Rydges Kensington Plaza
Executive double = £387.01 (3 breakfasts)
Normal double = £375 (3 breakfasts)
Millenium Gloucester
Club level King = £455.01 (3 breakfasts)
The Cranley
Normal double = £510 (3 breakfasts)
Executive double = £540 (3 breakfasts)
We have stayed in the Cranley before and enjoyed it but it is the most expensive. I have done a search on this forum and Tripadvisor and there seems to be the usual mixed reviews of the others.
We probably won't be in the room a great deal and as it isn't a special occasion I'm not so inclined to spend over £500 for three nights.
Any help or recent feedback on the hotels above would be appreciated.
Thank you
Jo

London is an expensive city, especially when it comes to hotels. I don't know the star level you are looking for but in April we got what we thought was a great deal through Priceline. We paid $115 USD/night for the 4* Waldorf Hilton on Auldwich in the the theater district (what Priceline calls the Mayfair/Soho district. There was no breakfast included but it is close to Covent Garden and we never had any trouble finding anything to eat.
I know this is a different season and you may get different results but you might want to give it a try to see what happens. You don't have to accept the deal unless they are accepting your bid.

I love the Basil Street Hotel (I'm one of the people who gave it a favorable review on Tripadvisor, which you said you've already looked at, so I won't repeat what I said there). I'm about to return for my fifth stay there since 2002, and, based on the rate I was offered, I'd say the rate you were offered sounds like a good one. I was offered a rate of £137.50 – including VAT, but not including breakfast – per night for a single room. Breakfasts at the Basil Street aren't cheap, so when you factor in the two free breakfasts you were offered, I figure you'd be paying only about £12 per night more for a double room than I'll be paying for a single.
I don't know if that helps you make your decision, but maybe knowing that you got a good deal would take some of the sting out of paying close to £500 for three nights in a hotel!

If you like The Cranley you will like The Basil Street. A stones throw from Knightsbridge tube, Harrods and Harvey Nicks.
The Millennium Gloucester is a large modern, fairly well appointed hotel which has a lot of tour groups. Rooms can vary in quality.
Hope that helps.

We just got back from a 10 day trip to London and Paris and loved staying at the Parkes Hotel in London in the Knightsbridge area. They were running a three night special package that included breakfast each morning. The hotel is on a quiet street near the Basil Street Hotel, around the corner from Brompton Rd. Very quiet, with large rooms with fabulous linens and marble bathrooms with great shower. Staff is very friendly. There is no restaurant but it has the best mini-bar I have ever seen and the area has tons of restaurants. Great maid service. Can't recommend it enough! I think we paid a little over $400.00 US dollars for a deluxe double on the 6th floor. It is a boutique type hotel. You won't be disappointed. Have a wonderful time.

Thanks for all the feedback
I phoned the Millenium Gloucester and was offered a Club Level King N/S for £105 a night including breakfast. I thought that was a bit of a bargin so have booked it. I will feedback when we return.
Still tempted by the Basil Street Hotel or the Parkes Hotel but think I will save those for a birthday treat.
Thanks again for all your help

Dear All
Had a fun if very hot and sticky few days in London.
The Millenium Gloucester turned out well in the end.
On arriving to check in at 1.30pm we found we had arrived just behind two enourmous tour groups. Even though we were checking in at the Club desk there just wasn't enough staff on duty.
After checking in we were told that they didn't have any rooms available, but one would be ready at 2pm, so we dropped our bags with the concierge and went and got lunch and bought bottles of water etc for the room. When we returned at 3pm we were told that there were still no rooms available and they didn't know when we would get a room. We didn't think that was acceptable and I just stayed by the desk and said I would wait whilst my fiance retrieved the bags. Unfortunately the concierge couldn't find the bags and it took twenty minutes until they were unearthed. By that time a room was available.
We had a room overlooking the inner courtyard so it was nice and quiet and the room was clean (if a bit shabby in places) and of a good size for London.
However at no point during check in were we told about the Club lounge or that we got a complimentary breakfast etc.
The breakfast buffet was fine, two hot dishes every day (scrambled eggs and either bacon or sausages) and fruit cereal etc.
Overall for the price we paid I would stay there again.
