I think Tuesday to Thursday are often the cheapest days to fly, but you have to check to find out for sure.
Hostels are generally safe, and can be fun, depending what you want. I suggest researching carefully and reading as many reviews as possible, so you get a good match to what you want.

If you go to British AIrways site (www.ba.com), you can enter in your flight, and it will show you the fares each way on +7 or -7 days, so you can choose the lowest one. Then I would search other sites (like mobissimo, site59, expedia, etc.) to see how they compare. It helps you to figure out what days are cheaper!

Be sure to ask to see the hostel before you plunk down your money. See if they have "safe" places to store your stuff and take a look at the people around you. Some are better than others and do not ever leave your money, passport, etc. unattended. I don't mean to be redundent, but my neice stayed in hostels in London while trying to find a flat, and she ended up in one that was quite satisfactory but there were a few others she and her friend checked out that just were not good. So, just check 'em out as carefully as you can.

There are lots of hostels in London - some are great, and some are truly dreadful. Unfortunately, most of the good ones are also very popular so they tend to be full.
Most hostels in the UK countryside are really fine, but in the major cities, many are also used by the social services to house down-and-outers.
I would definitely check out the lonely planet website for reviews of specific London hostels. Also there is a good little paperback -- "Hostels UK, The Only Comprehensive, Unofficial, Opinionated Guide" published by Globe Pequot. This is a terrific book with really candid reviews of hostels all over the UK. It tells you about the good, bad, and truly ugly.
