The best source of what's on on London is Time Out. The on line site is OK - but just picking up a copy at your arrival airport is probably best.
As for day trips - there are hundreds of choices. And MANY threads on here spelling out tons of choices.
How long are you in London? And what sorts of things do you hope to see? the choice of day trips is almost limitless so give us something to work w/

Take a train trip to Stonehenge. Stonehenge was an incredible site. My entire family really enjoyed the trip. The train ride took about 2 2 1/2 hours and there are buses that will take you from the train station - Stonehenge. You can continue on to Bath or tour a beautiful Church in Salisbury if you have a little longer day. ENJOY!!

I could tell you to visit Rochester, Winchester, Norwich, Salisbury, Portsmouth, Wimborne Minster, Cirencester and any of a few dozen other places because we enjoyed them. So what, you aren't me.
I will now give you the absolute best advice you will get to the first part of your question. Buy a copy of Daytrips London by Earl Steinbicker. It has 50 daytrips in and around London and Southern England with maps, how to get there by car or train. Your cost will be 35/40 cents for each day of the 6 weeks you are there.
You can get some answers to the second part of your question at:

You're welcome.
