Fever:

you can drive it and use the car ferries. From Narvik head south and take the first ferry at Skarbergett for a very short ride to Bognes, and continue to Skutvik, where you'll take the car ferry to Svolvaer. Easy but fairly long auto ride from there to beautiful Reine and several other equally scenic towns. Here are some pix to give you an idea of the sheer beauty of the Lofotens. Suggest you drive to the end of the highway south to the village of "A" (pronounced "Aw") ..just a short way from Reine.

(Scroll down to #124 for the Lofoten scenes...or catch the beauty of Norway from the beginning).

Thanks. The pictures are amazing.

Yeah, I intended to get a car. However, I am arriving by train from Narvik and departing by plane out of Leknes Airport. The price is around $1000 for a 4 day rental car with separate pick-up and drop off spots. Seems kind of crazy. So, it's either that or taking an 8 hour bus ride (which sounds rough).

Fever..I don't understand...arriving from Narvik to where? No train to the Lofotens. The $1000 a day seems way off. In Narvik, there's a petrol station in the center of the town that rents cars much cheaper. Ask for Sven Larsen whose email is svelars@aol. We rented from him for abour $70 USD a day..pick up Bodo, drop in Narvik. Just ask him to remember Stuart Tower from California who rented about fours ago.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well. We are arriving in Narvik from Stockholm around noon on 8/10. We have plans to stay in Reine for 4 nights. We then fly out of Leknes Airport on 8/14. So, essentially, for me to rent a car, I would need to pick it up in Narvik and drop it off at the Leknes airport. It's tricky price wise with the different pick-up and drop off spots and according to the travel websites, quite expensive to do it this way. I'll definitely contact Sven to see if he can accommodate something like this. Thanks for the tip.

Tower - What is Sven's email? I tried [email protected] and it didn't work. Is the suffix different? Thanks

Fever, that's all I have...but it could have changed in 4 years. Strange about the big charges on dropoff..there were none for us..pick up Bodo, drop off at that petrol station in Narvik. We took an overnight train from Narvik to Stockholm..nice, but long 19 hour ride. I'll look at another journal to see if I have anything else about Sven.

This may help..finally spotted it in my wife's notes:

The name of the petrol station in downtown Narvik is STATOIL, [email protected], Chris phone number 75506560, mobile 91179222, also 75502990, our cost was $410 USD for 6 days at the time. I'm sure it has increased since. It was an SUV (see pix). Good luck, Fever. (Be sure to use the Norway code for your phone calls.
