lodging in/near madrid

flying into madrid in early may would like to spend 3 days in the area, also going to stay a few days at the end of the trip. would like to stay outside the city and commute in by public transit. just need one day to get a taste of city. public transit to segovia for a day trip. pick up a car and then head south for a month of wandering in southern spain, portugal and finish with a week in the north. where would you recommend staying in madrid area?

thank you in advance for your help

I am not quite sure what you want to do. How does Segovia fit into this idea of only wanting one day in Madrid, but you don't want to stay in the city, you want to commute into it for some reason. Why is that? Do you mean you want to stay in Segovia for that day? Or do you mean you want to stay somewhere other than Madrid and other than Segovia and commute to both of them from that other spot?

This is confusing, but if that's your desire, why not just stay in Segovia, then? At least it cuts out one commute, and it's a lot smaller than Madrid.

sorry for the confusion. want to avoid getting our car until we leave madrid. would like to take a day getting over jet lag, then a day in madrid and then a trip to segovia. the next morning we would pick up our car. just thought that getting the car as we leave would be easier because it can be difficult and/or expensive to park in a major city. sorry once again for the confusion.

Axor Barajas or Axor Feria, near the airport.

Check out Alcala de Henares. You can take the commuter train into Madrid.

<< just thought that getting the car as we leave would be easier because it can be difficult and/or expensive to park in a major city.>>

And driving there is a bear too.

It'll help if you provide a nightly lodging budget . . .
