I am traveling to Switerland for two week with my wife and three children ages 6, 10 and 12 years. It will be my 50th birthday! We'll be joined by our close friends - a family of 4. We were thinking of Engelberg but the accomodations seem very limited. Saas Fee and Zermatt seem perfect. We are currently thinking of one week in each spot. I would love some recommendations regarding lodging that will cost less than say $7,000 CND. Can anyone help?

I am responding to get this back up to the top in hopes that someone who knows more than I will answer because I have not rented an apartment in Zermatt.

If you are going to stay a week in each place, let me suggest you look at apartments. I rented an apartment for a week one summer in Saas Grund, at the base of the valley whereas Saas Fee was perched up on the shoulder.
It was satisfactory to good for 3 of us, but not 4 without someone sleeping in the sitting room.

There are numerous rentals in both villages. You are looking at rome for 8 people? I think you will need 2 big places.

I think you can find something nice for $200 - $220 US a night per apartment, which would come out to less than you quote. At least I hope so!

The apartment I use in Lauterbrunnen would go for about $180 - $190 a night in high season and it would hold 4 because it is actually two apartments joined together. Zermatt may be a little more expensive.

Thanks Bob - I would love to find an appartment or chalet. What's the best way to find one? The internet seems confusion but I note that places are booking up quickly.

Hi, We were in Zermatt this past June and stayed at Hotel Allalin. Great place, wonderful breakfast(included)and good location. Try www.zermatt.ch and click on lodging and they list apartments, hotels, etc. We loved Zermatt, only there for three days and would have loved to stay a lot longer.

Try going to www.zermatt.ch and clicking on the English version. Lots to choose from as long as you haven't waited too late to book.

Another possibility for budget-minded (but in Switzerland and in my experience these are still good places to stay):

Let me suggest looking at the above web site. I saw one chalet that offered 8 to 10 beds. If I read your message correctly, you need space for 8.
It is an expensive place, however.

Zermatt is not cheap, which is one reason I have rented elsewhere and made day trips to Zermatt. I think you will find Saas Fee a little more reasonable.

My knowledge is a little out of date for that region. The last 4 years I have gone to Lauterbrunnen in the high summer season. Grindelwald may not be where you want to go, but it has plenty of apartments and the scenery is good and the development of cable lines and rail lines is greater relatively speaking.
Plenty of ski opportunities there too.
