lodging and route for my German vacation.
This is my plan for our trip.
We were going to just find lodging when we get to each town, but with Ocktoberfest I am a bit nervous about that. Here is what I have so far.
Sept 24,25 - Fly into Frankfurt and take the train to Wurzburg area( I would like to stay Sommerhausen but cannot find lodging)
Sept 26 - Nurnberg
Sept 27 - Ulm
Sept 28,29,30 Munich (Have reservations already) Drink beer
Oct 1 - Garmisch-Fussen area
Oct 2 - Frieburg
Oct 3,4- Boppard or Sankt Goar
(Wine festival in Boppard)
Oct 5- Mosel area
Oct 6 -Frankfurt
Oct 7 Fly back to US
I need help in suggestions on lodging, I am hoping to stay under 100 US dollars per night. Bed and breakfasts would be great or a nice clean hotel. Also things not to miss in each area. Also an easy walk from the train station.
Thanks
Josie

I don't think you have enough time for the Garmisch-Fussen area-I'd take a night way from Munich to add it there.
We just stayed at the Hotel zum (or is it zur?) Loreley in St. Goar and I would recommend it. We had a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, full kitchen, living room, balcony flat for 125 Euro a night (5 of us), so I bet you could get a room (for 2?) for $ 100 a night there. As for Oct. 3, 4 and 5, I'd stay the same place and day trip to the Mosel-it's not very far. And it's so close to Frankfurt, I'd really stay there (in Bacharach or St. Goar or Boppard) on the 6th, too.

If you stay at Garmisch-Partenkirchen IŽd like to mention the Hotel Panorama on a hill a bit out of town but with a lovely view of the two cities and an astonishing view of Zugsptize. We stay there many years ago and we always remember this little hotel and the superb food.

There are a number of lovely small towns around Wurzburg. We have stayed in Wertheim northwest of Wurzburg and in Iphofen, southeast of Wurzburg. Both towns have much to offer but I don't know if they can be reached by train since we had a car.
www.wertheim.de
In Iphofen, we stayed at a wonderful small hotel that had very reasonable rates. We had a spacious modern room for under 60 Euro.

I have looked at staying in Sommerhausen myself and have some webites for hotels if you'd like to try them:

If you plan to stick to this itinerary then I suggest you do some online shopping for hotels and privatzimmer near train stations. I wouldn't worry about reserving any place ahead of time. If you can arm yourself with a list of possibilities in each town - you can call them when you arrive or the day before. Plus there is almost always a Tourist Information Office near the Bahnhof. Tell them you need help finding a doubleroom for less than 63 Euro ($100) that is not far from the train station. I will be in Germany in October and have no reservations but I will go with printed lists of accommodations within my budget for each town I plan to visit. To get such a list - go to the homepages of the towns you will be visiting and navigate to the hotels or accommodations section. Here are a few that might be of help to you -

Since you have a reservation for three days in Munich why don't you go to a local Munich travel agency and take a day trip to the Royal Castles or whatever it is you want to see in the Füssen area instead of training there and having to work out the logistics and transportation yourself. Take the extra day and spend two days in Gengenbach instead of Freiburg. While in Gengenbach you can ride the Black Forest trains free and can do several day trips around the Schwarzwald.

If the wine festival is in Boppard - you don't want to stay in Boppard. Stay in St. Goar for three days and train up and down the river and take a day trip to the Mosel to visit Burg Eltz, Cochem and anything else you want to see.

I have no idea where you could find a room for less than $100 in Frankfurt but I can think of no reason to lose a day on the Rhine. I have spent my last night in Germany somewhere along the Rhine almost every year. You just have to get up a little early that last morning to catch the early bird train in to the airport train station.
You have two months to plan your trip a little better. The more prepared you are for what you want to do - the better your experiences will be and the more likelyhood that you will find accommodations in your price range. Good luck... Ben (www.bensbauernhof.com)

The website for Sommerhausen, www.sommerhausen.de, has an extensive listing of accommodations in the area (even has English). Have you already tried all of them?

The easiest way to find a hotel that fits into your budget is to choose a location and use www.hrs.de.

In Nürnberg, I stayed at Gasthaus Pillhofer. It is really a restaurant with a few rooms for rent upstairs. It was basic but clean and close to the train station (but also walking distance to the old city center). I paid €54/night inclu Breakfast for a single. Best to call for a reservation.

Thanks for everyones help.
Bavariaben,
If you got your rooms for under 24.oo each night is it because it was last minute accomadations or is that typical? So is it possible to get a double room for under $50.00 us dollars a night? We `are trying to stay cheap. Also even with Ocktoberfest you would not worry about reservations around Germany?

To get a double room for less than $50 (31 Euro) is tough but it can be done. Traveling by train makes it more difficult as you will seldom find anything within walking distance of a train station for anywhere close to that. You stated you wanted accommodations less than $100 (63 Euro) and that's fairly easy to accomplish if you take the time to research the towns you will want to overnight in. The real budget lodging and restaurants are to be found in smaller towns and rural areas. Oktoberfest seldom affects rates for the villages well away from Munich. Farms are my lodging of choice. Cheaper rates and I enjoy the atmosphere and host families. If you have more than a day or two to spend in one location then I recommend apartments (Ferienwohnungen) for the price. The only downside to apartments is that you usually have to pay extra for breakfast - but the apartments come with kitchens so you can shop locally and make your own meals. The key to cheap accommodations is pre-trip planning. Best of luck... Ben

Is there a special reason for your stop in Ulm? the cathedral is beautiful and there are obviously other things to do /see but I wouldn't stay overnight. I'd add another day to Nurnberg or Munich (latter might be hard due to the timing of your stay there) Or I'd visit Regensburg or Landshut.
I would also cut out the Freiburg stop and pick a destination farther north
I assume you are staying the last night in Frankfurt for your flight home. I like staying in Mainz more than Frankfurt. It is on the s-bahn line to the airport

There are three hotels (Hammer, Schottenhof, and Königshof) a short walk across the Bahnhofsplatz from the Mainz Bahnhof. Of the three, I would suggest Königshof (www.hotel-koenigshof-mainz.de). 27 minutes by S-Bahn every half hour; €3,60.

As for Boppard (www.boppard.de), it has a beautiful waterfront walk with hotels across the walk from the river. Two hotels you might look into are Rheinlust and Belleview (Belleview is a Best Western). On the other hand, if you can speak German, I know of a nice privatzimmer, but the young couple that runs it does not speak English.

dutyfree--yes, the S-bahn trip between the airport and Mainz is very easy. It takes about half an hour

Thanks for the info-am trying to secure a spot for a few nights in Mainz as my husband and daughter will be about a day or two behind me for joining my son because of work.
My airline used to layover in Mainz and now lays over in Weisbaden but I was not familiar with the above hotels so appreciate the list.We used to stay at the Hilton on the Rhine but it got REALLY gross so they moved us.I am such an "Italian fan" that I usually don't bid German trips so am learning alot from all of you!
