location of Codex Calixtinus restaurant in Canicosa, Segovia

Hello,

From what I understand, this restaurant has unfortunately closed. But my question really pertains to the former location of this restaurant in Canicosa. We are thinking about renting a small house right across the street from where this restaurant used to be, and I want to know what the immediate area is like. We would be staying here for a week and using it as a base from which to explore the area, but I want to make sure that there is a little something going on within walking distance of this spot. Is this location in the center of Canicosa? Are there restaurants and stores in the area or is it more rural than that? If you can provide me with some details about the immediate area, I would greatly appreciate it!!

Hi Katherine. I was lucky enough to dine there in May of 2007. Yes sadly it is closed. It is so close to Pedraza.
We stayed in Pedraza at the Hospederia de Santo Domingo.
Look for my report from 07.

Codex Calixinus is /was at Ceces, 6 Cañnicosa-Segovia.
E mail was (maybe still good) [email protected]
site www.codexcalixtinus.com

Canicosa is so close to Pedraza de la Sierra, and between Pedraza and Matabuena (I am reading it right off the map on the business card I still have.)
We drove from Pedraza in the rain to Codex it took 7 minutes.

To answer your question is was located in a very small rural area. It was raining so we did not see the immediate area in the daytime. But seemed very rural. Even Pedraza was bigger...There were not many shops to see the very immediate area of the restaurant but it may still be a wonderful experience. Pedraza had some cute shops etc and the castle which we loved.

Tell more about your interests and I will get back if I can find some of my notes for you....

Yes the area of Pedraza and Matabuena is rual, but lovely. And fairly short trip to Segovia proper and La Granja de San Ildefonso.

Thank you very much for your reply, Amsdon!

We would be happy to be in a town area as small as Pedraza; That's the sort of lodging location, actually, that we would prefer as our base. And Hospederia de Santo Domingo looks lovely, but since we will have a small child with us, I am hesitant to stay at a traditional hotel. We found this place (http://portonsegoviano.com/) in Canicosa, and it looks beautiful and exactly what I would want for lodging, but I'm just concerned about being in the middle of the country without, at least, a small town center to walk to. We will be getting in the car daily to explore different towns in the area, but it would be nice to have a restaurant, a small grocery store, a small town center to walk to when we'd rather stay "home" for part of the day or for an evening.

My first priority is to find an appropriate lodging base in the area since having a toddler in tow makes that more difficult. Then I'll start thinking about itineraries. I did peruse your trip report last night, Amsden, and will definitely take some cues from your experience! It sounds like you had a fabulous time!!

I really appreciate your input, Amsden!!!

I had the same impression as Amsdon. We drove through in the daytime and I doubt if there was much, if any, commercial activity at all. Pedraza is a metropolis in comparison! The area is beautiful, however, and there may well be shops close by, we just did not notice any.

Thanks ekscrunchy!

Well, I actually found an apt for rent in Pedraza that looks very nice! So my next question is this. Is Pedraza a good base from which to explore the area? I have read that mid week the place is very quiet, and that is perfectly fine with me. But will there be any restaurants open? Will there be any shops open?

Also, can you give me a few details about the siesta? What is the timeframe? Does everything close up during that time? Also, when is dinner typically served at restaurants?

Thank you sooo much! I've read the old posts of you (ekscrunchy and amsdon, and they are hugely helpful!!!

Apt in Pedraza??? Great!!

Re Siesta...Pedraza was one place that definately honored siesta with strict adherence.....I mean nothing opened till 10:00 (maybe later) and then suddenly it was 1 and all was closed. There are a few restaurants yes. I am sure you read in Maribels's guides. There is a small shop for sweets another for breads, etc, but quite honestly for a down home store you can buy some stuff in Segovia proer and take that in an large insulated soft sided tote (my favorte thing)
Try "lunch" at Yantar at 2-3ish. Dinner well hard to say in Pedraza.

You MUST MUST read Ekscrunchy's report too....

Thank you, Amsden! So load up on provisions in Segovia, and then hope for at least 1 restaurant to be open for lunch and/or dinner in Pedraza mid-week.

Believe me, I will read both your report and Ekscrunchy's for details before we go!!

Thanks very much!!

Can I trespass on your kindness once more and ask a favor? I emailed the owner of the apt in Pedraza asking if it is available June 18th through June 25th (departing on the 25th). Here is the part of his response that I am having difficulty translating:

"De poder entendernos le digo que el día 25 tengo la casa ocupada, lo cual en caso de estar interesados tendrían que dejarla el día 24 por la mañana."

Is he saying that the apt will be occupied UNTIL the 25th or that the apt will be occupied ON the 25th.

I'm sorry to be seeking translating advice here, but I'm not sure who else to ask and times a'wastin'!

Thanks so much!!!

is says on the 25 the house is occupied and that you would have to leave the 24th in the morning.
