Locando Orseolo or Pension LaCalcina in Venice

I have narrowed my hotel choices to Locando Orseolo or the Pension LaCalcina. They both are approx. the same rate and both sound great. Please offer opinions.

stayed at Orseolo few years back with friend who had severe cat alergy and he started sneezing after getting to room. Later we saw cats laying on the couch outside the room so if cat allergies beware - otherwise it was fine.

zannie,

Saw your other posts about this trip. How wonderful it should be. As to your choice here---I can't speak to the Orseola, but mu husband and I loved our canal-view room at La Calcina.

If you do choose La Calcina, be sure to reserve the roof-top terrace one evening just before sunset. Walk up the Zattere to the little Billa market, buy a bottle of wine and a couple of antipasti, and spend a magical hour up there watching dusk fall over the rooftops and the Guidecca.

Sounds wonderful, but I have a stupid question....why do you have to reserve the rooftop terrace? Isn't it open to all who stay there?

You reserve it for exclusive use---it is quite small (one table with chairs, and a couple of lounges).

I suppose during the day it might be open to all for lounging and sunning, but for aperitivos and romance you would want it all to yourselves. So it's nice that they allow you to reserve it.

I would contact the hotels to see if they both have availability before you stew too much over the decision. They are both extremely popular and fill up well in advance.

The La Calcina rooftop terrace is teeny tiny with only room for a few people. It's a GOOD thing that you can reserve it for yourself for an hour or two.

Orseolo is a very much loved hotel on this forum and for very good reason...I have been there twice in the last two years and it is my favorite hotel anywhere. Check out reviews on Trip Advisor.

I've never seen a cat Orseolo. I believe Barbara and Mateo have been operating Orseolo for only 3 years or so -- so it's possible it was the former owners who had the cats.

Zannie, I had also narrowed my two choices for either Locando Orseolo or the Pension LaCalcina. After reading reviews on www.tripadvisor.com, www.slowtrav.com, and Fodors, I've decided to book Orseolo! I saw many more positive reviews for Locando Orseolo than for LaCalcina.

We, too, loved Locanda Orseolo. I have severe cat allergies and had no problems this past June.

La Calcina also gets excellent reviews and is situated in a lovely spot.

You really can't go wrong assuming they have availability.

Have fun!!

zannie, you did not say when you are visiting Venice. But the Locanda Orseolo typically is difficult to get reservations unless it's almost a year in advance. The La Calcina seems to be just as popular too.

It was about six years ago when we had the cat allergy attack at the Orseolo - old owners i guess - some very pale albino type guy at the desk.

Yes. That was definitely the former owner.

Question- Is it still worth it to stay at Orseolo if I can only have a room with no view? I can also have a room at the Pensione Accademia, but the rooms in the photos look nicer at Oseolo. Any thoughts, or any one who knows them both?
Thank you!
