local trains and buses into Naples

Dear Fellow Travelers,

We have found a lovely rental in Valva, in the Sorrento area of Campania, for our vacation, but we are worried about driving to tourist sites, especially Pompeii and Naples.

How can we use the internet to figure out trains and buses that run into Naples? We have a car so we are flexible. We figure we want to find a the most useful station nearest Valva, which might be Salerno but might not be, and use that as a travel hub.

Our visit will be in mid-October if that is any help. We are looking to relax. Our focus sites are Naples (museums and churches), the ruins in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the ruins at Paestum (which we expect to drive to).

If any of you have personal passions about restaurants, interesting sites, or beautiful drives, please let us know!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Ellen

Hi eb,

You will be near Salerno, not Sorrento.

Ask your rental agent about getting to Naples.

I think that you will have to go to Salerno. SITA bus schedules are at http://tinyurl.com/ybe6xk

Enjoy your visit.

Hi Ellen - The nearest station appears to be Contursi Terme - which has occasional direct services to Naples (- via Salerno/Pompeii).

Alternatively you could drive to Eboli (- or Battipaglia) and take the train from there to -

- Napoli Centrale
- Pompeii
- Salerno (- for Amalfi Coast ferries)

etc.

For train timetables see:
http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

You can get to Herculaneum (- Ercolano) either from Pompeii or from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi stations on the Circumvesuviana train:

www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm

Hope this helps ...
