Lisbon Tour Guide

We will be arriving by cruise ship and would like to arrange a private tour for a group of us. It is much nicer to do small tours than large bus tours. Is there anyone you would recommend to me.
Thanks
Marg

We have used guides from Tours for You while in Lisbon, although for a post-cruise stay. ( www.toursforyou.pt ). We used them for two differnt tours - one was a private full-day trip to Evora, and one was a 'public' half-day trip to Sintra and Cascais. If you happen to get Joana, you're in for a real treat - she was a fantastic guide for the trip to Evora. But I have seen posts on Cruise Critic that make me think that some of the other guides are just as good.

I have a suggestion for a tour guide for the Lisbon area. His name is Peter. He is picking us up at the airport and taking us around Lisbon for 4 days. He has been good about answering my questions. I got his name from a Fororite, and have always been happy with the reccomondations. His name is Peter,His E-mail address is [email protected]
I hope this will be helpful to you. I will give a report when we get home. We will be in Portugal September 13-October 6th. Chris

I need some help from my fellow Fodorites. I have been communicating with a tour guide in Portugal-until a few days ago I didn't know his fee. When he sent it to me I was shocked at the price. I E-mailed back & asked if this fee included admission to museums & castles & lunch & he said no. I just popped off a note to the tours for you that I saw in this site to see if his fees were comparable.
I don't know what to do at this point as we leave in less that 1 month.Should I post how much was to be charged for each day to get your input. Thank you so much. Chris

I'll give a guess - 50 Euro per hour?

You have to decide if you can afford/want to pay for a private guide. If you don't then cancel but look at the terms and conditions before making a final decision. Private tours are very expensive. I'm rather surprised you didn't ask the price when you first began communicating with the guide.

Lisbon has extensive & very good Public Transportation systems from a user friendly MetroLisboa to the #28 TrolleyBus. MetroLisboa Stations feature everything from sculptures & artwork to Mock Factories. When they opened the Oriente line for Expo98 I even went to write a review of MetroLisboa but it was never published.

Decide where you want to go & what you want to see (i.e., Belém or the Expo98 site or the Baixa & Praça do Comercio) and use Public Transit to get there. On your way to Belém you might even stop at Hennessey's Pub for a pint at Caís do Sodre.

adriene-Hi Since I don't know how long each of these days are I'm not sure of the hourly rate. I did ask him along time ago and he never responded. I tried looking through my correspondence & couldn't find a date I'd asked him or how many times.
I did just E-mail tours for you & I will await to hear from them. I also E-mailed my hotel where we are staying. We'll see what happens. If admission and a lunch each day would have been included I would be more pleased. Live & learn

Have you looked at these walking tours. I've not been to Lisbon so I can't recommend anything but they've been written up in several guides. Most large cities have walking tours that are quite good. They're usually 2 hours. Lisbon walks says they're between 2 and 3 hours and are very reasonable - 15 Euros per tour per person. You don't need to book ahead for the regular tours.
