Lines at attractions in St. P. and Moscow: on our own or get tour?

I am visiting St. Petersburg and Moscow in a 6-adults party.
We heard that the lines at places such as Hermitage are awfully long, and that it is better to buy internet tickets or get a tour.
Is it the same in other touristic places? For example, if we go to St. Peter and Paul Fortress or to Peterhoff or the Catalina palace in Pushkin.

Would you help us decide which ones we order online (if we a guided visit it would be great) and which ones is better to visit on a tour?

Thanks
B
