Lesvos 7 nights

Hi there,
Me and my GF will spend 7 nights in Lesvos between 18-25 Aug, 2012. We want to enjoy at sandy beaches and also visit some famous historical / natural sites. I planned 3 nights in Petra, 2 nights in Skala Kalloni and 2 nights in Plomari and half a day in Mitilini.but I can revise according to your advice. Also ı have some questions:
1- Renting a car is a must ??? Can we go around by bus?
2- There are buses between Mitilini and the main towns. What about the buses between these main towns?

Thanks in advance
Faruk

You have chosen a wonderful island
There is a lot to see and do on Lesvos...

A car in my opinion is a must, this is the 3rd largest Greek island after Crete and Euboia.
Using local busses is possible, but not convenient, as you can't stop where you want, not all main towns are connected to eachother, in most cases you will have to change bus and lose time.

Sandy beaches.....
Best sandy beaches of the island are in Anaxos, Petra, and Skala Eressou. I would recommend also Agios Isidoros( near Plomari) and Vatera ( the longest beach of the island).
The most beautiful village of the island is Molyvos, one of my favourite spots of Greece, this is where i would like to overnight when in Lesvos... although Petra is nice too...
( but cannot be compared to Molyvos...)

Skala Kallonis is a place where i would definitely not overnight, i would choose a hotel in Skala Eressou instead.

So, It seems better to spend 3 nights in Molyvos, 2 nights in Skala Erossou and 2 nights in Agios Isidoros or Plomari.

Thank you very much for your advice

Molyvos is simply breathtaking , having a car will allow you to drive to the beaches of Eftalou, these are several beaches with pebbles, a short 3 min drive from Molyvos.

From Eftalou you can drive to Skala Sykamnias, a nice little village on the sea, where you can eat great fish

Yes, 3 nights in Molyvos, 2 in Skala Eressou and 2 in Agios Isidoros sound perfect.
Plomari is a nice small town, it is where Ouzo is coming from.. Wen you drive to Plomari, be aware of the wild roaming Mules and Donkeys that can sometimes stand in the middle of the road...... Lesvos is an island that you will love, i spent 8 months there, visited every little corner of the island and fell in love with it.

From your profile i guess that you are from Turkey, unfortunately there are not many monuments left from the ottoman period, a mosque in Mytilini, and a few smaller ones on the way to Skala Eressou... but still very interesting to see... ( as much as i enjoyed visiting converted churches, or abandoned churches and monasteries in nearby Ayvalik, which i loved ).

If you have more questions about Lesvos, please feel free to ask me.

I agree with Clausar, exploring & moving between places is best by car. Staying at 3 seperate places & trying to move between them by public transport would waste so much of your short time there.
It is a wonderful & very diverse island, so many places worth a visit. Some of them can be seen in these sets of photos,

Hm... are you Kenan Imirzalioglou?
He arrived today in Lesvos from Ayvalik, with exactly the same plans like you... rented a car and disappeared.....

I couldnt visit the forum for long. Thanks for all your comments. Clausar, I am from Turkey but I am not Kenan and I will be appeared as much as I can

Meanwhile, I booked rooms for 4 nights in Skala Erossos and then 3 nights in Molyvos. For the sake of not to bothered by immigration:, I deleted Agios Isidoros leg. I am not sure whether still we need a car ???
Good wishes to everybody

You can visit the main towns with the public bus, try it and that shouldn't be working, you can always rent a car.

In my opinion Lesvos needs the flexibility of a car, so that you can see more.
Faruk enjoy the beautiful island of Lesvos, and it would be great to read a trip report from you, once you are back

Clausar, thanks a lot for your replies. I will try my best to write a trip report . From the trip reporter web sites or blogs by Turkish visiters, I saw always very good impressions about Lesvos (and also for other Greek Islands) and Greeks. This will be our first in Greece and believe to be happy there.
Best Wishes

Hi Nikolas,
we are back and full of happiness from Lesvos. Our ferry from Ayvalik delayed 2 hours due to the crowd of hundreds people from Turkey (it was the day when Ramadan Holiday began and we missed the last bus to Erossou and there was no rent a car in any company. The taxi would cost 135 euro and we decided to spend the day and night in Mitiline. We found a low quality pension(with diffucuily) in Mitiline. We first discovered the city and then rested in the kafe at the end of the pier and first introduction with Greek people was there. The cafe was full of retired people and they were very friendly. The next day we had the bus to Skala Erossou where we had very lovely days with the envirement, food and with the local people. We observed that the local peoples eyes are shining when we said we are Turkish and really it was very sensual for us and once more again I understood that politicians and some fanatics were the only barrier between to sociaties for many years. We spend 3 nights in S. Erossou in Ostria Pension. It was simple but clean as we looking for always. The pension owner Angelina had guests / relatives from İsyanbul.
We took the bus to Kalloni for Molivos and we rented a car in Kalloni by chance. We turned back to visit Sigri and Petrified Forest and also main churches. We liked all there and then moved to Molivos by visiting Anaxos and Petra. My GF liked Molivos very much than S. Erossou but I am between them . The next day we spend half day in Anaxos beach at Aggelos Restaurant. The food was very good but the unforgetable was the friendship of the owner Nikos. We spend afternoon in the silent Ampelia beach by the recommandation of our pensions (the schoolmistress of golden eyes) owner Yorgos. In the 3rd day in Molivos we spend some hours in Skala Skeminias, Eftlaou and some other small beaches. We ate always in different restaurants in harbour. Food was always good or very good and the staff either. In the last day we followed the coastal way to Mitiline and after shopping (cheese, ouzo, etc.) we took the ferry to Ayvalik. We decided to visit Lesvos in every summer.
My notes:
- Sea water is very clear in S. Erossou and Skamenia than the others we visited. Beaches and the environment are always very clean
- Lesvos has everything to attract tourists and that is the case, however, the people employed in this sector could speak better English.

AND THE SURPRISE
I will spend the next week in Lesvos with my sons (16-19 years). Now, my plan is to spend 2 nights in Plomari, 2 nights in Vatera, 2 nights in S.Erossos and 2 nights in Molivos.

Thanks for your comments. If you visit Turkey, I will be very happy to comment you.
Best Wishes,
Faruk
