My understanding has been that the "transformation" of Les Halles is to begin in 2007 and will follow the design proposed by Mangin. Does anyone know the status? has any work begun? Is there a link to additional information on teh web?

http://www.linternaute.com/meilleur/halles/17.shtml indiates work wont start until 2008. They refer people to a project site www.projetleshalles.com which doesnt seem to exist yet.
Maybe they'll put up the ornate iron old market sheds they foolishly tore down in the ill-planned 60's redevelopment scheme. I'm so old that i remember when Les Halles was a food market and saw these sheds that would have made a wondrous setting for the new Les Halles.
I don't expect any work on the new Les Halles project to begin until at least 2009 (since the next municipal elections are in 2008).
If you have French, this page on the City of Paris website outlines progress to date:

They plan to choose an architect for the new Carreau building later this year, and to start work on the gardens in the first half of 2008.
